[AD] How To Buy The Perfect First Car For Your Teen

Your teenager has passed their driving test, which is equal parts incredible and terrifying! The thought of your child out on the roads is scary, but you’ll soon get used to it. For now, there are bigger things to think about, such as the car they’ll be driving.

If they can’t share cars with you, then you’ll have to help them get one of their own. But, how do you find the perfect first car for your teen? Well, here are a few things to think about:

Think about their safety

First and foremost, you have to go full dad-mode and think about their safety over anything else. Don’t buy your teen a car that’s clearly unsafe! Unsafe cars are ones that have a terrible service history and can break any moment, along with ones that are proven to not be very safe by people who’ve driven them. The best approach is to look at a list of the safest cars on the market, then see if any of the options are suitable first cars. 

Choose something that’s easy to drive

Some cars are much easier to drive than others. Typically, the hardest cars to drive are the fastest ones. Now, let’s say your child started learning in a small car like a Fiat 500. If you get them something big and powerful like a BMW M3 or even a Ford Focus, then it can feel like they’re driving a motorcycle! This is because everything is quicker and more responsive in bigger and more powerful cars. A subtle nudge of the accelerator will send them flying down the road in a blur! So, as much as they’ll try and convince you to, don’t buy them any sports cars or any big and powerful vehicles. 

Always buy used

To some, buying a used car seems like a bit of an insult. At least, your teen may feel this way! However, there’s nothing wrong with buying used cars. As you can see on the Dunwell Motor Group website, there are loads of really nice and impressive used cars for you to buy. So, there’s no need to worry about quality here at all. The reason you opt for a used option is that it’s way better value for money. Buy your child a new car, and it will instantly decrease in value the moment they turn it on. Plus, let’s be honest, teenagers get into a lot of car accidents. Therefore, you don’t want to spend loads of money on a brand new car, only for it to get busted up in a few weeks. If this happens to a used one, then at least you didn’t pay that much for it. Oh, and used cars are easier to repair and service as the parts are more widely available.

Your teen is probably super excited after passing their driving test. Show them how proud you are by getting them a lovely first car. Make sure it’s safe, easy-to-drive, and preferably not brand new!
