How to get into the festive spirit
It’s not as easy to feel festive when you grow older, especially when work commitments, family pressures and loneliness are thrown into the mix. Plus, money may be tight and you can end up dreading the big day rather than looking forward to it.

However, we all deserve to feel happy at Christmas. It’s a magical time for all and offers the chance to rejuvenate, ready for a brand-new year. We’ll be outlining our top tips on how to get into the festive spirit this year.
Listen to Christmas music
Listening to music can always help lift our mood. No matter what you’re doing, whether you’re driving home, working out in the gym or doing chores around the house – music can make these tasks a little more bearable.
Why not start playing your favourite songs to bring the Christmas cheer? Perhaps you absolutely love belting out Jingle Bells or Deck the Halls when no one’s looking (don’t worry – we won’t tell!). Or, why not dust off the old Michael Bublé Christmas album for old time’s sake?
Decorate your space
Christmas decorations are bound to help brighten your home and make those dark, winter nights as cosy as possible. Hang indoor fairly lights around your living room, kitchen or bedroom to help illuminate your space and give your home that extra sparkle.
Put up a Christmas tree in your lounge area to bring the festive atmosphere when sitting down with all the family. Decorate with baubles, tinsel and lights to bring it to life – and don’t forget the star on top!
Watch Christmas films
You can’t beat curling up on the couch when it’s cold outside and watching your favourite Christmas film. The majority of main TV channels often play some of the classics throughout December, so there should be something on for everyone to enjoy.
Or, perhaps you have a collection stored away somewhere. Dig out some of the all-time favourites, such as Elf, Love Actually and The Holiday.
Festive baking
Baking is a great way to relax and unwind, and you’ll get a tasty treat at the end of it! Combine your usual baking with Christmas, ensuring you leave the kitchen feeling festive.
You could try making gingerbread men, warm mince pies, Christmas crumble or Bailey’s brownies – the list really is endless!
Indulge in Christmas treats
If you’re a terrible baker – worry not. The supermarkets are stocking plenty of festive treats for you to enjoy, from cheeseboards and pigs in blankets to buttery shortbread and chocolate sponges.
You could also head to your local Christmas markets and enjoy an array of Christmas cocktails, boozy hot chocolates and delicious mulled wine.
