How to Maintain your Golf Clubs

April 4, 2018

Golf clubs can represent a big investment, so it’s important for you to look after them! In this article, we’ll be teaching you all about the maintenance tips and tricks you need to keep your clubs in top shape.

Regular Checks

Before we get into the maintenance side of things, we’re first going to look at how you will know your clubs actually need maintenance. You should be regularly checking the clubs to understand what needs done and when. Check over the grips, shaft and balance of the clubs on a regular basis.

If you’ve had them in storage for a while, give them a good look over before you go ahead and take them back on the green.

The Grips

A worn out grip will give you less power in your swing and potentially mean you drop your club while playing. If you lose grip during a swing, then the club can go flying, which can mean a potential injury to others and damage to your club.

Learning how to regrip these is quite easy, though you can also go to a professional to have this done. The tape isn’t too expensive either, so if you do want to learn, you don’t need to worry about wasting it.

Cleaning

Before you store your clubs away after each time you play, make sure they’re clean and dry. Dirt and water can seriously damage your golf clubs if left without cleaning. Rust can set in and dirt can hide nicks that could be impacting your performance on the green.

Clean them before putting them away and give them a quick inspection before you play. Look for any nicks or flaws within the club so you can ensure that it’s ready to take to the green.

Use Head Covers

Golf clubs won’t last forever, but if you use head covers and protect them, they’ll last a lot longer. When you’re making your way around the green, these will clash together and the small amount of friction will soon mount up. Use a head cover that fits and will prevent these from coming into contact with one another in the bag.

Transport them Carefully

When it comes to transporting your golf clubs, make sure you’re careful with them. So many clubs have been damaged by a player throwing them in the back of their car too forcefully. Even relatively little force over time can culminate in bending the shafts of your clubs. Again, you need to give these a quick inspection before you play. If your clubs aren’t properly aligned then you’ll end up with a poorer game, as small bends can put your swing off by a huge amount. Golf is very much a precise sport, so if your clubs are off then you won’t be as good as you possibly can be.

If you want to be the best player on the green, then this starts with a reliable set of clubs. Look after these and your game will improve in no time.
