I’m Going To BlogOn MSI

I’m going to BlogOn MSI in a couple of weeks, and this will be the first blogging conference that I have ever attended!

I’m nervous, but also excited, most likely because this is way out of my comfort zone. Although I am looking forward to meeting many online friends in person for the first time. If you can’t find me I will probably be hiding in the corner, haha!

Here is a recent picture of me, but I would like to point out that I don’t always dress like this, well not often, haha!

Describe yourself in three words…

Easy question to start then! Ok then, funny, temperamental and caring.

How long have you been blogging and what made you start?

I have been blogging approximately two and half years. I started blogging by accident, that is literally by accident! I came off a ladder in my job as a painter and decorator, and I broke my right wrist in four places which left me unable to work for six weeks. My wife, who is also a blogger, (Twin Mummy and Daddy) was always saying that I should start a blog and now that I had a lot of time on my hands, I did exactly that, with a lot of help from my wife, Emily. Before I knew it DIY Daddy was born! I very clearly remember writing my first post left handed on my phone!

What was the inspiration behind your blog name?

There was no great inspiration to the name, but my intention was to write about parenting and DIY, so it seemed an obvious name, although today it’s predominantly parenting posts. It helps of course when you are a father of five children, there seems to be an unlimited amount of posts for me to write!

What is the best thing to come from your blog so far?

There are two things that I am immensely proud of, the first was last June 2016, when I was named in the Vuelio Top 10 Dad Bloggers UK. When I looked at the other people in the top 10 I thought WOW! Am I really included in with these guys?

The other one happened just a few days ago when on a Monday morning I had a tweet to say I was shortlisted in Blogosphere Magazine’s Parenting Blogger of the Year category. There are two things about this. Firstly I never knew I was nominated, and secondly I have never been nominated, let alone shortlisted for anything so it’s a very special moment!

Your most remembered thing from your childhood…

This is a really difficult question because I had what I called an interesting childhood. Probably best described as a very dysfunctional family life, but I have many happy memories of playing cards with my grandmother and having a cream cake on a saturday afternoon.

Something interesting you might not know about me is . . .

I’m not sure I’m actually that interesting, but I have always loved tattoos and love gaming so to join my greatest passions a few years ago I had the Xbox tattoo on my upper arm. Sadly with five year old twins there is very little time for gaming nowadays!

Which social media platform best describes your personality and why?

I would have to say Twitter. Ever since I started blogging I have always used Twitter. It’s quick and very easy to use and because there is a limit on characters they are easy conversations and quick, and my personality has always been to get things done in a hurry, which I feel is how Twitter works.

What is your happy song?

These are tough questions, the problem for me with this question is I probably have loads of songs that make me happy, but one particular song is ‘Knockin on heavens door’ by Guns’N’Roses. If it comes on the radio it instantly puts a smile on my face and I can’t help but sing along, I was and still am a huge fan of Guns’N’Roses.

What is your favourite alcoholic drink

Coke. I don’t drink any alcohol.

What is your favourite cake?

I definitely like a homemade Victoria sponge and my wife makes the best ones. Just not often enough, haha!

What is your favourite takeaway dish?

Very easy! I love the chip shop! Always have for as long as I can remember. My favourite from the chip shop is chicken curry and chips off the bone with a battered sausage on the side. I LOVE IT! I would probably eat it every day, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t be very healthy!

Where is your dream holiday destination and why?

I don’t have a particular destination that would be a dream place to visit, but my dream holiday will always be a fully inclusive holiday in the sun with a two minute walk to the beach.

What would your superhero name be?

Haha! What a fab question, well I think I would Captain Tantrum! I’m normally very even tempered, but when something goes wrong on my my blog I throw the most almighty trantrums as my wife can verify!

If you had a magical power, what one would you want to have and why?

My magical power would be to have super fast hands, because then in my job as a painter and decorator I could paint houses in an hour, I think that would be pretty cool.

What one weapon would help you survive a zombie apocalypse?

I love this question mainly because I am obsessed with The Walking Dead TV series, and one character in the show is a woman called Michonne. She has a samurai sword and I think that would be my weapon of choice, and she is not bad looking either!

If you could send something into space, what would it be?

My kids on a regular basis for peace and quiet, haha! Only joking. I think I would send my blog for the aliens to read at least that way I may get some views!

What would you have on your gravestone?

He lived life, enjoyed every moment, made mistakes, but had a great time and had no regrets.

You make headline news around the world in 2 years time… but for what reason?

It has to be write a post that goes viral across the world and makes me millions.

If an EMP wiped out all mechanical forms of transport, how would you get to BlogOn?

Find a white stallion and ride like the wind across the countryside until I arrive although it’s possible I could end up anywhere. Haha!

  1. I really fancied BlogOn but don’t think there are any tickets left. Need to get my act together next time haha. Great insight. I love tattoos too (I’m covered!) and quite often go to tattoo conventions 👍🏼

  2. Fish and Chips, Grannies and Victoria Sponge cake – we are blogging twins! Congratulations on all of your accolades in the blogging world – looking forward to meeting you at the conference!

  3. Hy Nigel nice to read your icebreaker! I think you might find it hard to hide in a room full of bloggers there will always be somebody to chat to! Back in my Nanny days i use to look after twin girls from 6m until there where nearly 5 it was a lot of fun (and hard work) but i absolutely loved it. It still didn’t prepare me on becoming a mum myself thats a whole other page of a book! Looking forward to saying Hy to you at BlogOn! AK

  4. I can sympathise with the ‘no time for gaming’. I used to really enjoy it when I was breastfeeding because I could spend hours feeding and playing at the same time! Once they’re crawling about your time is eaten up. Mine will all play with me now, so your time will come again 🙂

Have a safe trip however you travel, we’ll see you Sunday! Thanks for taking part in the linky. Jenny – commenting on behalf of myself and Blog On UK.
