Is Your Kid Crazy About Cars? Five Ways to Keep Them Busy!

As parents, encouraging our children’s passions and interests is part of our job. It doesn’t have to be academic, anything they take a liking to can inspire them to learn and find out more about the topic, build skills and even meet new people- and if you’ve got a kid that’s crazy about cars there’s plenty of directions you can go in with boosting their understanding of the subject. Here are a few ideas for going about it!

Go to a car event

There are tons of car events held up and down the country throughout the spring and summertime. Along with races or cars on display there’s often food and drink, market stalls, music and much more making them great family friendly days out. Even if you’re not crazy about cars yourself, you certainly won’t be bored. Tickets are often reasonably priced, and if you bring your own picnic you can save on food and drink costs.

Visit a motor museum

Motor museums are great days out for the whole family. Best of all they’re usually free to enter, and as they’re indoors make a great rainy day activity when you want to get out of the house but aren’t sure what to do. From the Transport Museum in Coventry to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon to the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu and many more- if you search for these kinds of places you’ll be surprised how many pop up. If your child’s interests extend to motorbikes and other kinds of vehicles then there are even more. Museums often have interactive exhibits so appeal to children, and there’s plenty of information for them to learn and take in. From different types of cars to how they were made and produced to how some of the parts work.

Play driving games

Video games are a great way for kids to kill an hour after school or at the weekend when they’re complaining they’re bored. Have a look online for some of the best car games which are sure to keep them busy if they have a thing for cars and driving. Video games might not seem like the most productive hobby in the world, but as long as they’re not replacing exercise or socialisation they can be a great way for kids to de-stress and just have some fun. If it’s a multiplayer game, you could play with them and enjoy some quality time together.

Book some junior driving lessons

The legal driving age in the UK is seventeen, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until your seventeenth birthday to get behind the wheel. Junior driving lessons offer children as young as eight the chance to develop practice their skills in a safe and legal environment. Often held on race tracks, airfields and other wide open spaces (due to the fact they won’t be allowed to drive on the road) there are lots of these experiences you can book up and down the country and could be a lot of fun for your car loving kid. From learning maneuvers to road safety, there are even some race sessions you can book for children. It gives them a chance to pick up skills and knowledge at an age where learning is much easier- it’s no secret that the older you are, the longer it tends to take you to pass your driving test. It will be fun for them, and when they reach the legal driving age they’ll already have some knowledge and experience which can make passing quicker and easier.

Try go karting

Another way kids can physically drive a vehicle is by going go- karting. There are often deals online and on sites like Groupon so it doesn’t need to cost a bomb. Whether it’s a weekend treat or a party for their birthday where their friends come along, it’s sure to go down well. It’s not the same as driving an actual car, but a great thrill seeking activity and they still get to handle and drive a vehicle by themselves.
