Mobility Aids That Can Help My Mum Around Her Home
My mum is now in her late eighties, and it has been quite difficult to watch her go from being a very active and independent woman, to somebody that is now completely reliant on other people to do anything or go anywhere. It really is quite sad to watch the zest for living disappear from her.
Sadly, there is only my wife and I to help with my mum, and basically most of it is left to me because my wife works, and we of course have six year old twins to raise.
My mum lives in a three bedroom, semi-detached house and, over the last 12 months, she has rarely ventured upstairs due to her mobility. This all got me thinking about how I could help her have some more mobility in her own home.
I went online, as you do, to find out more. Thank goodness for Google! Where would we be without it? Lost! While I was browsing I came across the perfect solution. Fitting a stair lift. This is exactly what I was looking for to give my mum the full use of her home.

While online I came across Handicare Stairlifts UK. They have a fantastic range of stair lifts to suit all homes. They can supply straight stairlifts and curved stairlifts which will be exactly what I’m looking for, for my mums house as the stairs are curved at the top of the stairs. They also do outdoor stairlifts and perch stairlifts if you have very restricted movement, and they operate across all the country which makes it so much easier to arrange a stairlift for my mum.
Climbing the stairs has become an almost impossible task for mum. She’s riddled with arthritis, and over the last few years both of her knees have been replaced. Of course, with old age comes the inability to do many other things. There is always a danger my mum could fall while just getting up out of the chair to go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea.
So, climbing the stairs poses a bigger danger, and the likelihood of falling is even bigger. If she was to fall down the stairs I dread to think of the injuries that she may to do herself or possibly worse. My mum lives alone and although I only live around the corner if she was to fall early evening, and she couldn’t reach the phone or was knocked unconscious she could easily be lying there all night.
By installing a stairlift it will have many bonuses for her. She will be able to sleep in her bed upstairs, instead of falling asleep in the chair downstairs.
Of course the bathroom with her shower is upstairs along with all her clothes so this is where a stairlift would be perfect for her. It will also give me peace of mind that when she goes upstairs she is strapped into the seat of the stairlift and can’t possibly fall.
Having a stairlift will enable her to use all of the house safely, giving her back her independence in her own home.
Having mobility is something that when we are younger we take for granted. This is sadly not the case for the older generation, so to give our elderly parents or relatives mobility we need to make sure they have as many mobility aids as possible. As such a stairlift is a vital piece of equipment to help make our parents have an easier life in their twilight years.
I would love hear your thoughts.

The first thing that caught my eye Nigel was that picture of the stair lift. Their design has clearly changed so much over the years! Huge improvement. I have known relatives that have installed stair lifts and made good use of them. It is a good option to consider I think and I can see how your mum might benefit.

Additions like this make all the difference to the elderly. My Grandma was able to keep her independence for much longer than she would have been able to thanks to the addition of a stairlift and an accessible shower.
