My Twins and Parents Evening

February 11, 2017

My four year old twin girls had their second parents evening a few days ago. It’s always a very interesting evening. Trying to extract information from four year olds about what they are doing at school is usually impossible, so it’s nice to see their school books and chat to their teacher about how they are progressing.

Their start to school life last September was a little bit disjointed. Unfortunately their teacher went on long term sick and was eventually replaced by a new teacher who has been a constant in their classroom ever since and that has definitely had a settling effect for the girls.

R and M are both doing really well and their literacy are both on target to finish where they would like them to finish at the end of their first school year.

R is doing really well with her numeracy and they see no problems for her. At our previous parents evening we were told that M had a few issues with her numeracy and consequently was having a little extra tuition three times a week at lunchtime for about 20 minutes. Obviously if she needs a little extra help to progress then I’m all for that. What bothers me is that four to five months have now passed and she is still receiving this help. It also became very obvious to me that she had not been reassessed at any time to see if she still required it. I felt it was carrying on without making regular assessments.

At no point since this has started have the school approached us to say that they would like to carry on this informal arrangement or even say that we could help by doing certain excerises at home. The lack of communication from the school I find very annoying. An email or quick chat at drop off or pick up is not out of the way surely?

We have been promised that M will be reassesed soon and we will be informed of the best way forward. If I’m honest I’m not holding my breath that this will happen. Before the girls started at the school I had high hopes for the school, but I’m afraid their lack of communication has dented my enthusiasm.

Parents evening generally was very good. The girls have grown in confidence and the fact they are twins and they most definitely relied on each as a sort of security blanket. Since Christmas this has changed although I noticed myself how their confidence and independence has moved up a level which is nice hear that reliance on each other is less.

Their teacher said they were well behaved and they were a pleasure to have in the class. The truth is you couldn’t ask for more.

Thank you R and M for making me a very proud daddy !

Maths was not my strong growth point either! Glad to see they are doing well!
