The 3 Important Factors That Go Into Buying The Right Pickup Truck

A pickup truck is a major investment. It is likely to be one of your biggest purchases after your home. The problem with buying a pickup truck is that it is such a personal thing. Everybody’s needs are different so it isn’t easy to pick one that suits your situation without thinking about a few things ahead of time. 

The things you are loading into a pickup truck is going to be different and your budget will also certainly play a big part. It makes sense to think of some of the factors that you need to know about before you can make such a big decision. It’s not simply a matter of if somebody says that a Ford f-150 is a better truck than a new Chevy 3500.  In this article, we will go over several of those factors so you can decide for yourself. 

1 – What size is right?

There are two predominant classifications when it comes to pickup trucks. They are light-duty and heavy-duty. This involves how much it is able to haul. This is in part due to the size of the cargo area. Not all large pickups have a large cargo bed. In fact, there are some that are large but light duty since the cargo bed gives way to more passenger space in the cab. 

You’ll have to decide what you will mainly be using your truck for. If you need it to haul lots of bales of hay then you need that cargo space and have to go for a heavy duty truck. If you have a family and will only occasionally be using the bed then you can go for a light duty truck. 

Mid size trucks are the most common ones that you see the average suburbanite driving since it gives you decent fuel economy while also providing some space for cargo as well as passengers. 

2 – The powertrain

Many purists believe that it is not worth owning a pickup truck that doesn’t have a V8 engine and four wheel drive as its powertrain. This is because with those features you can do just about anything with your truck. It will handle some offroading due to its four wheel drive status assuming that you have the undercarriage raised. And, you can load up the cargo bed with most material and still not be weighed down. It can also handle towing a boat if need be. 

The reality is that not everybody needs to do all of these things so a powertrain that has a 4 cylinder engine and front wheel drive will be sufficient for many people. 

3 – Towing vs cargo

The last consideration is whether you plan to do more towing or loading the cargo bed. There are many different configurations that a truck will take on if it is going to be towing as opposed to using the payload. It’s up to you to find out what the maximum capacity is to tow and then see if it covers what your towing needs are.
