Plasterboard Sheet Sizes and Thicknesses for Dry-Lining Projects

Plasterboard comes in a fairly narrow range of sheet sizes and thicknesses, but choosing the right combination matters. It affects the number of joints you’ll need to finish, how easy the boards are to handle and how much material ends up as waste.

For most UK dry-lining projects, 1200 x 2400mm sheets in 12.5mm or 15mm are the standard choice. Where fire performance is required, fire-resistant plasterboard should be specified as part of the correct system.

Which Sheet Sizes Are Available

Most manufacturers work to the same standard dimensions, which makes planning around common stud centres relatively straightforward. The usual choice is 1200 x 2400mm, as it suits most walls and ceilings and works with both 400mm and 600mm stud centres.

For rooms higher than 2.4m, 1200 x 2700mm boards can remove the need for a horizontal joint, while 1200 x 3000mm sheets suit taller walls and stairwells. At the other end of the scale, 900 x 1800mm boards are easier to handle in lofts, repair work and areas with restricted access. As most plasterboard is 1200mm wide, length is usually the main decision, and it makes sense to use a full-height board wherever access allows.

How Thickness Affects Performance

Board thickness affects rigidity, strength and how well the plasterboard performs between supports. 9.5mm plasterboard is lightweight and useful for some ceilings and over-boarding, but it can flex on walls with wider stud centres, so it isn’t normally the first choice for general wall applications.

12.5mm plasterboard covers most everyday dry-lining work because it performs well at common stud centres, takes a skim coat and remains manageable for one fixer. 15mm plasterboard adds impact resistance and can improve acoustic and fire performance as part of the correct wall build-up, although its extra weight can make larger sheets a two-person lift.

Matching Board Type to Each Room

Thickness and sheet size only tell part of the story. The conditions in the room also determine which board you need, so using standard plasterboard everywhere isn’t always the best approach. Bathrooms, utility rooms and other humid spaces generally require moisture-resistant board, while party walls and home offices may benefit from denser acoustic plasterboard to reduce sound transfer.

Where fire performance is required, fire-resistant plasterboard is designed to form part of a specified wall or ceiling system. Tapered or Square Edge

The finish you want will usually decide which edge profile to choose. Tapered-edge plasterboard has recessed long edges, allowing the joints to be taped and filled to create a flush surface, which is why it’s widely used for dry-lining.

Square-edge plasterboard has no recess and is generally chosen where the whole surface will receive a skim coat. Both have their place, but avoid mixing tapered and square edges on the same wall, as the difference in profile makes achieving an even finish unnecessarily difficult.

Calculating How Many Sheets to Order

Start by measuring the length and height of each wall and multiplying the figures to get the area in square metres. You only need to deduct larger doors and windows, as smaller openings often produce offcuts that can be used elsewhere. A standard 1200 x 2400mm sheet covers 2.88 square metres, so divide your total wall area by this figure to estimate the number of boards required.

The calculation is only part of the job, though. Add around 10% for cuts and waste, increasing this to roughly 15% for rooms with several openings, reveals or angled walls, then round up to whole sheets. Calculate ceilings separately because board direction and support centres may differ from the walls below.

Fixing Method and What It Rules Out

The two common approaches are dot and dab and mechanical fixing. Dot and dab uses adhesive to bond plasterboard directly to suitable masonry, making it a quick option for sound, dry surfaces and standard 12.5mm board.

Mechanical fixing uses screws to attach plasterboard to timber or metal framing and works with different thicknesses and multi-layer systems. Where a fire rating is required, the board, fixings and installation method need to follow the specified fire-resistant construction rather than being chosen separately.

Where Orders Commonly Go Wrong

A lot of plasterboard ordering problems can be traced back to a few simple decisions. Ordering 2400mm boards for a 2.55m-high room, for example, creates a horizontal joint on every wall that could have been avoided with longer sheets. Ordering standard plasterboard for the whole property can cause similar problems if bathrooms, garage walls or other areas turn out to need specialist boards.

Confirm Your Specification Before You Order

The simplest approach is to choose a sheet length that suits the wall height, use 12.5mm where standard plasterboard is appropriate, and move to thicker or specialist boards where the project needs additional performance. For fire-rated areas, check that the fire-resistant plasterboard, thickness, fixings and complete wall or ceiling build-up meet the required specification rather than relying on the description alone.

Measure each room separately, include a sensible waste allowance and confirm availability with your supplier before ordering. Longer sheets and specialist boards aren’t always stocked in the same quantities as standard plasterboard, and checking before the job starts is much easier than arranging another delivery halfway through it.
