Renovating Our New Home

After seventeen long years of renting, and in truth never knowing every year on our renewal date whether we would have to move again, which quite honestly is not a nice feeling, we joined the property ladder and brought our first home. It was a strange feeling knowing that for the first time in years we could decorate exactly as we wanted, but oh my goodness it was the best feeling in the world!

The property we bought was in need of complete renovation. There wasn’t a single room in our home that didn’t need sorting out.

I’m a painter and decorator by profession so I made my mind up to treat the work as if I was working for a client and thought it was best for my wife to decide on design, colours and anything new such as new furniture. That way I could just get on with doing the renovation and hopefully have it ready to move in when our tenancy ended in the rental property where we were living.

The first job of the renovation was quite simply rip everything out so we could start with a blank canvas. Once all that was done I could start with the renovation.

The first job was to get the electrics done on the property and also the gas combi boiler checked to make sure it was safe.

While I got on with the painting and decorating of every room, my wife was arranging the many new items we would need for our new home. First thing on the agenda was to design the kitchen and order all the kitchen units, hob and oven so I could fit the new kitchen.

We had an element of our own furniture but there was a number of new items that we were going to need. Our twin girls and us were going to need new beds and bedroom furniture.

We also didn’t have a dining room table or chairs, so when looking online to find a dining room table and chairs that suited our style and our new home, we came across this amazing choice and selection of dining chairs. They were definitely our style and would definitely fit in perfectly with our new decor.

I started the renovation of our new home in early June with the intention of hopefully moving in by early August. There were many long days and finishing late into the night working to get our home perfect. There were not many hiccups along the way but like any big renovation you can have the odd problem. Thankfully I was able to get over those and I managed to finish by early August so we were able to move in.

We are now loving living in our very own home and I’m very pleased with how it has all turned out. If I was to pick my favourite part of the renovation I would have to say the kitchen. I totally transformed the kitchen and created so much more room by simply knocking down one wall. It’s now a fresh, clean and modern, very functional kitchen and I particularly like the Belfast sink. Also by fitting everything myself I saved myself thousands of pounds.
