Should I Encourage My Child to Join a Sports Club?

June 4, 2020

Encouraging your children to take a break from their phones and get out of the house onto a sports pitch brings a range of benefits, especially in terms of their physical, mental and social skills. These skills will help them throughout their childhood and even in the future when the time comes to apply for universities and jobs. Of course, every child is different, and you need to think about their unique needs when it comes to encouraging them to join a sports team as it might not be the best option for them. However, all in all, it is clear that the pros overshadow the cons. To help you decide whether or not it’s a good idea to encourage your child to join a sports club, I have teamed up with a prep school in Kent to provide you with the following useful information.

Being part of a sports team will help your child feel a sense of belonging and understand the importance of working with others toward a shared goal, while also improving their ability to communicating effectively with others. All of this contributes to enhanced self-esteem. In addition, being part of a sports team will allow your child to meet lots of other children who have a shared interest, opening up new friendship opportunities.

It’s important for children to experience the highs and lows of both winning and losing, so that they can learn how to gracefully accept the ups and downs of life. They need to understand that sometimes they won’t perform as well as they’d like and they might even feel defeated at times, so that they can transfer this understanding to other areas of life, such as not being accepted for a job interview.

As well as the social and communication skills learned as part of being part of a team, it is also great for keeping your child physically fit and healthy. This will reduce their risk of various chronic diseases that are usually associated with poor lifestyle choices. What’s more, sport is fantastic for easing stress because exercise releases endorphins in the body that act as a natural painkiller. Numerous studies also suggest that exercise improves a persons’ ability to concentrate, which will hep your child work well in school.

Most importantly, being part of a sports team allows children to have fun in a structured and supervised manner.
