The Age Of Information And Technology

May 31, 2017

We live in a world of information that is a finger click of a button away. Technology has truly made our lives easier and when we want to access anything it’s with us in a split second.

As time moves on it’s harder and harder to remember what it was like to live without the internet, but I’m old enough to remember.

I remember the days of good old fashioned paperwork and calculators. I always remember doing the accounts at a company I worked for years ago. It was a completely manual job, writing all the figures in a ledger from invoices and then adding them on a calculator one at a time. If the figures didn’t tally up together you would have to add them all again. This was incredibly time consuming, but it was the only way to do it. The times I had to do it a few times and spend hours on it was incredible, but of course it had to add up right, and be correct for my boss.

As I have already said my children really don’t know life without the internet and computers, and when I relate my stories of my early working life they are genuinely shocked that it was all done manually, almost no computer or spreadsheets, no, absolutely nothing.

Of course thankfully with the very fast advancement of technology we are able to store and access information via electronic document management which is a huge benefit to businesses. They are able to access all of their documents quickly from the cloud and of course this is also organised and whatever document you need is there on the screen with the click of a button, nothing could be easier.

Today’s world of technology also offers enterprise content management which although sounds complicated, is actually brilliant because it helps businesses become more efficient and organised, plus consequently makes important decisions within the business.

Accessing any documents that you require can be done anywhere in the world at just the click of a button. It’s also important as businesses are becoming more global, therefore this is a vital tool to have in your buisness. It could be the difference between securing a deal or losing a deal.

I’m always amazed at how times have changed in such a relatively short time. The days when I would have my head down, buried in paperwork and concentrating on writing figures and adding up numbers on a calculator seem to belong in the dark ages, and rightly so!

Computers and technology have taken the hard work out of having to rifle through paper work and I for one am not to sorry to see it gone! Technology has its crictics that’s for sure, but it is making life easier for individuals and more importantly businesses. Which is something I welcome, as I myself also run my own self-employed business. I no longer have to hand write quotes and store them in a filing cabinet or folder. I can simply type them up on my laptop and store them on my computer, safe in the knowledge that everything is backed up to the cloud should the worst happen.

I would love to know your thoughts!
