The Definition of Mindfulness

March 18, 2022

Mindfulness is not a trait that some people have and some don’t. Rather, it is a state that everyone has the potential to access. Some people achieve a state of mindfulness when doing an activity that requires focus and presence of mind, such as riding an adult electric tricycle. However, you can learn to achieve and maintain a state of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is defined as an awareness of the external world, e.g., your surroundings, as well as your bodily sensations, feelings, and thoughts. It involves being present in the current moment without imagining the future or dwelling too much on the past. It also means being aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. In other words, you are aware of what you are feeling or thinking without evaluating whether it is right or wrong.

Many people equate mindfulness with meditation, but while meditation is one way to achieve mindfulness, it is not the only way. Mindfulness has roots in Buddhism, but in recent years, a more secular practice has emerged. In other words, you do not need to practice a particular religion or believe in a specific faith to practice mindfulness.

5 Tips To Make You Aware of Your Surroundings

Awareness of your surroundings is not the only aspect of mindfulness, but it is one of the most important.

  1. Let go of the past. You cannot go back and change things that came before. You can only move forward with your life now.
  2. Stop forecasting into the future, especially if you are imagining negative outcomes as though they were foregone conclusions. You cannot know for sure what is going to happen, nor can you dictate certain outcomes. You only have control over what is happening in the present.
  3. Engage all your senses when observing your surroundings. Exert an effort to be consciously aware of smell, taste, and touch in addition to sight and sound.
  4. Really listen to other people when they speak instead of making judgments about them or planning what you are going to say when it is your turn to speak.
  5. Practice self-care by making time for food, sleep, exercise, and leisure activities. Schedule them in a datebook if this is the only way that you will keep the commitment to yourself.

Meditate on the Bike Path

Riding an adult tricycle or bicycle offers a good opportunity to practice meditation because you have to focus on the road just in front of you and stay in the current moment. As you ride, concentrate on your breath, counting each time that you inhale or exhale. Because you are exerting yourself physically, your breath may be quicker than it would be if you were at rest. Try to clear your mind of anything unrelated to what is happening in the current moment in which you are riding your bike and focusing on your breath.

When it comes to mindfulness, there are few shortcuts. Nevertheless, meditating while riding a bike allows you to combine two aspects of self-care: leisure and exercise. If this is enough to convince you that riding a bike can help increase mindfulness, start looking online for a women’s bicycle sale.
