October 17, 2023

How many times have you looked around your home and thought to yourself, I cant find anything that I want. Well, if you are anything like me, it will be often.

A natural thing for all of us to do is to keep certain items with the belief that we will need them one day. The truth of the matter is, if it has been put in a cupboard or drawer then we will forget we ever had it and the chances are we will never need it ever again. So, why are we keeping it? It’s unnecessary hoarding of rubbish.

You should never under estimate the importance of de-cluttering your home. Frstly it will free up space in your home and it will also free up space mentally and ultimately put you in a better frame of mind. It will add order to your home and to your life in general. Decluttering your home will decrease your stress levels and make your home a pleasure to live in.

Here is a guide to decluttering your home and make living in your home a pleasure and not a chore.

1. Making a de-cluttering plan

Before you even start to declutter your home, it’s very important that you formulate a plan. It must be a plan that is achievable. There is no point in deciding that you will do the whole home in a one day, because believe me, you will not achieve that. You’ll end up disheartened and unmotivated before you even get going with de-cluttering your home.

A good way to start when making a de-cluttering plan is to start de-cluttering your home room by room. A brilliant place to start is the children’s rooms. They are invariably full of toys and games that the kids have not touch in years. They will be everywhere. In wardrobes, draws and more often than not, stuffed under the bed.

Another good place to start is the kitchen. How many appliances like coffee machines or slow cookers are stuffed in cupboards and haven’t been used in years? It’s a great way to free up space in your kitchen.

2. Storage system

Once you have decided on which room to start your de-cluttering process. You may find that you don’t want to get rid of everything and keep some of the items. It could be some of the children’s toys that have sentimental value.

That is perfectly fine but, you will need a good storage system so if you ever need to access them they are easy to find.

There are many ways to store items. You could put them in plastic boxes and label exactly what is in each box. Once you have done that you can install shelving in your garage and then store everything neat and tidy in your garage.

Or you could store all of your items at a storage company where you can have access to your stuff at any time. Many storage companies such as Storing.Com will pack up all your stuff and take it to their secure storage facility, so easy and takes all the hassle for you.

3. Keeping your home de-cluttered

So when you have finally de-cluttered your home it’s important that you keep it organised and tidy and don’t allow the clutter to start building up again. A couple of tips is to have a system where you work on a timetable of de-cluttering every room and making sure that anything that is not used you get rid of it.

Also, be harsh when you are getting rid of your stuff ask yourself, am I really going to use that again? The chances are the answer is no so either get rid of it or put it into storage.

4. Disposal of unwanted items

There are of course many items you will get rid of and it’s very important that you dispose of these items in a responsible way. Don’t just get rid of it to landfill which has been happening for far too long and as we know the consequences on the environment has been devastating.

So when getting rid of your items, stop and think how you dispose of these items.

Charity shops are always looking for quality items and you will be helping by raising funds for the charity.

Re-cycle the items in a responsible way so it can be re-used in another form or product.

Try selling it so somebody else can use it and that will also put some cash in your pockets.

So, there is my guide to de-cluttering your home and why it’s important for your mental space and of course freeing up space in your home.
