The Pandemic And Substance Abuse

September 8, 2021

The global pandemic that the world has had to endure for what is now nearly two years has been very difficult for so many people.

The effects of the pandemic are only now starting to surface and how people coped or more importantly how people didn’t cope with loneliness, anxiety, isolation and possibly the loss of a much loved family member or close friend. There is no doubt that for many of us our mental health and wellbeing was damaged and sadly for many of us we would turn to something to help us get through a tough time.

One such way that was used, that is now only just becoming obvious to everybody is the amount of substance abuse that people would turn to because of the loneliness and consequently depression that would ensure from either having to isolate or the fact that many countries were in full lockdown for many months on end which meant that many of us wouldn’t see anybody for possibly weeks on end.

Now the world has finally started to open up again with few or no restrictions, the true cost of the pandemic, especially substance abuse is now starting to show. Many people have relied too heavily on drink or drugs to just get through the day.

Although drinking alcohol is considered a socially acceptable pastime, during the pandemic many people through loneliness, boredom or anxiety could have easily turned to alcohol to help. Unfortunately alcohol is a very addictive substance and the more you drink alcohol the more your body craves it and before you know it you cannot start the day without a drink. Research is showing that many people turned to drink to help them through the pandemic.

2. Drugs

Drugs are another substance that is now beginning to show as the pandemic comes to an end that have been abused. It’s so easy to see how easy it was during the pandemic that people turned to drugs to help them through what has been a tough time.

Anxiety, depression and loneliness will have played a major factor in how people will have turned to drugs such as cannabis or cocaine to help them through very tough days because of restrictions of just seeing family and friends and being stuck at home alone so they would have been looking for something to ease their levels of anxiety. Unfortunately this would have gradually escalated and before they knew where they were, the use of drugs would have developed into an addiction and finding help for such an addiction was very difficult during the height of the pandemic.
