The Parents Class – Pregnancy Classes for Mums and Dads

August 14, 2023

Pregnancy is an emotional roller-coaster for both mums and dads, and can seem even more so for first time parents.  There’s so much advice from family, friends, celebrities, even complete strangers like to give unsolicited advice.  Once a baby bump begins to show it can feel like you’re drowning in a sea of conflicting dos and don’ts when all you really want to do is make the best decision for you.  The Parents Class is a new service which helps soon to be parents navigate their way through and make the right choice for their family.

The Parents Class is a new service offering antenatal classes providing evidence-led information, delivered by experienced and qualified midwives.  The courses on offer have been designed by multi-award-winning midwife Cass Macnama.  What’s wonderful about The Parents Class courses is that they cover the things you expect from a pregnancy class including preparing a birth plan, feeding your baby, preparing for labour and delivery, but they also cover topics you might not even have considered.  These topics include delayed cord clamping, upright birthing, and even storing your baby’s stem cells.  The topics are covered without an agenda, so parents can weigh up the benefits to their family for themselves.  In addition, parents who book a course with The Parents Class will have access to course materials so they can look over the finer details and discuss in their own time, and to revisit topics at their leisure.

There are currently 2 courses available; the mid pregnancy course for parents between 18 and 28 weeks gestation, and the full antenatal course for parents between 30 and 38 weeks.  The courses are delivered in beautiful locations so that you and your partner can really relax and cherish these special moments, giving you an incredible place to bond with each other as you learn about your baby.

These classes are great for dads-to-be to attend, they encourage open communication and collaboration between partners. Attending these classes together fosters teamwork and strengthens the bond between expectant fathers and mothers. Through shared learning experiences, couples can discuss their beliefs, concerns, and aspirations for parenting. This mutual understanding can reduce potential conflicts and ensure that both parents are on the same page, creating a supportive and harmonious environment for the child’s upbringing.

Additionally,  parenting classes equip fathers-to-be with practical skills that boost their confidence in caring for their newborns. Topics such as feeding, soothing techniques, and basic healthcare are covered in these classes. Armed with this practical knowledge, fathers are better prepared to actively participate in caregiving from day one, promoting a sense of competence and involvement. This early involvement also helps establish strong father-child relationships, positively impacting the child’s emotional development.

While The Parents Class is a new service, they already have an online community to be proud of, it’s free to join, giving parents the opportunity to read, ask questions, and find support from others on their own pregnancy journey.  Connecting with other expectant fathers facing similar experiences creates a sense of camaraderie and normalises their emotions and concerns, while giving them the opportunity to give support.

Antenatal classes are invaluable for fathers as they prepare for the journey of parenthood. By providing insight into child development, fostering open communication with partners, imparting practical skills, addressing postpartum challenges, and building a supportive community, these classes empower fathers to be active, confident, and nurturing caregivers. The knowledge gained from parenting classes not only benefits the child but also enhances the well-being of the entire family unit. As society recognises the evolving role of fathers in parenting, these classes stand as essential tools in ensuring that dads are equipped to embrace their responsibilities with understanding and enthusiasm.
