We won’t change after the baby’s born. Ha, ha!

January 13, 2022

We won’t change after the baby’s born.

How many times have I heard that? More times than I care to mention!

Of course your life won’t change, you only have a little defenceless human being that cannot do anything and I mean anything for themselves. What could possibly change?Well, believe me, everything changes!

Of course the people that say this are usually ones that have not had any children before and I mean this in the nicest possible way, but they haven’t got a clue!
I have five children from 20 years of age down to three year old twins and of course my life hasn’t changed! Oh except of course for 20 years my sleep has been broken and that’s just the beginning!
The minute you come home with your new born baby everything is different.

Your world revolves around this little baby that needs your attention 24/7. You actually don’t have a clue what you are doing! Why should you? You have never done this before, it’s a massive new learning curve. I have always compared it to starting school because everything is all so new.

Your life is centred around feeding, changing and getting your new born to sleep. This was exactly how my life was before. Yes of course it wasn’t! Absolutely nothing is the same. Don’t get me wrong it’s an amazing time, but to have any chance of enjoying it you need to embrace the whole experience.

So here are my 10 things that have changed in my life since having children.
1. My sleep pattern was totally disrupted by my first child. She was an awful sleeper and I don’t think I ever recovered
2. I have always loved gaming and could easily have played Xbox all day. Well those days have certainly gone
3. Children’s television – I am an expert! I am sad to say I think I could actually lecture it at university I have watched so much of it!
4. I am a taxi service for children ferrying them everywhere and I can guarantee you that goes on for years and years
5. I am so safety conscious it’s probally overkill, but you see dangers that don’t even exist because you don’t want any harm to come to your children. You constantly look at possible dangers that may happen. Paranoia I would imagine they call it!
6. All of a sudden you have to organise your own life around your children. I think spontaneity disappears just a bit!
7. We regress back to childhood, initially speaking in baby talk and then actually enjoying playing with their toys
8. Eating your children’s leftover food – I would never eat anybody’s leftover food before having children now I constantly do it!
9. Singing nursery rhymes in your head. On one occasion actually listening to it in the car on my own on the way to work!
10. And finally finding time to be myself. You are never that person again because children change the way you think, the way you do everything in your life.
The truth is that when you become a parent you cannot be selfish. Your life revolves around your children and life is never what it was, but I would never have it any other way because children are a truly wonderful blessing. Your life is richer for having them in your life.

Totally agree! EVERYTHING changes! It's how you adapt to change that can be the make or break to your sanity! My mummy found it tough the first couple of years x #LetKidsBeKids

Oh boy does everything change! In many ways my life is so much better, well if you don't count that there's constant noise of one kind or another which bugs me, or that I'm constantly (literally) seeming to clean up where I just cleaned not less than 5 minutes ago, or that I can't do anything alone lol. But, change for the better is has been and I truly wouldn't change it 🙂

Yup, yup and yup….everything changes..and so much more! Some things for the better…some not so good. But if we all remained the same forever wouldn't that be boring? #bestandworst

So true! We were a bit in the "nothing will change" camp – oh how naive we were!

Yeah, I had no idea how much would change. Turned my world upside down. Why are nursery rhymes so catchy? I find myself sitting at my desk at work singing 'Put…on…your…shoes, your shoes, your shoes' like a lunatic.

I agree. Everything changes, but though it may be a whole lot harder, it is hugely richer and fuller.

I don't have children, but I can imagine my life would change drastically if I did! Especially the safety one you mentioned. Even when babysitting, I see things as dangerous that wouldn't even enter my head normally! Thanks for hosting the #binnkylinky

I can soooo relate to this post. The one thing I never EVER thought I'd be doing was to give up a job to look after my two boys.

And the television, yep, I can name the characters in Peppa Pig but these days I don't even know the players in my own team! Match of the Day once only watched one last season.

But I'm sure if you were to ask any parent, they wouldn't swap it for the world. Little lives are so precious.

Love it – we totally did this and even after we'd had Reuben a week we were still not quite ready to fully change. Three years later and I feel barely recognisable at times!! Oh and I regularly listen to nursery rhymes on my own in the car!

I love this!! My life has changed beyond recognition since I had the kids – going from a career girl who spent all her money on shoes and handbags and getting extremely drunk on a Saturday night, to a mum of three who hasn't bought shoes for two years and falls asleep after a glass of wine at 8pm on a Saturday night! I especially love the point about leftover food – the kids leftovers are my tea usually! Thanks for linking up to #SuperparentSaturday

One thing I love is all the parents-to-be and their "I'll never do that to / with my child" comments. I just think to myself "just wait till the little darling comes and you'll soon be singing a different tune"! Haha! Wouldn't swap it though!

Isn't it hilarious how many people think nothing will change! Absolutely every single thing will change forever… but in wonderful ways. Wow five kids over twenty years, you've been at it a lot longer than me, but I can already relate to most of the things you've said!! #DiffLinky

Very true Nigel. I have heard that comment said a few times. I find it quite sad because I expected my life to change MASSIVELY…and it did. When I hear that comment I wonder how committed the parents are. They certainly aren't realistic!
