What Food Should You Be Eating On The Golf Course?

April 8, 2021

This always comes as a huge shock to people who don’t play golf, but it’s an extremely active sport! You’re talking a minimum of four hours of walking across the green and, with the average golfer exceeding 10,000 steps during a game, the need for regular food and drink is crucial.

But when it comes to sustenance, what should you be going for? After all, choose the wrong snacks and you could find yourself battling with heartburn and bloat. Or on the flip-side of that, you may be left feeling weak and unsatisfied. Either way, the food you eat can have a direct impact on your form during play, so it’s worth thinking ahead to avoid making the wrong choice.

If you want to avoid becoming dehydrated or hungry during your day on the links, we’re here to help with our guide to the types of foods you should be eating during your round of golf.

Learn from the professionals

We don’t know about you – but whilst we’ve been stuck in lockdown, we’ve watched a lot of golf. Not only has it been great at passing the time, but it’s also been super helpful in improving our own skills too. After all, watching the pros on the green isn’t just entertaining, but it’s also very educational.

But, whilst we’re noting down techniques on how to best hit the driver, we’re also taking in the sorts of food and drinks the experts are consuming to keep them on top form. So, here’s a list of the sorts of foods the professionals are eating to sustain them:

  • Fruit and nuts
  • Protein bars
  • Peanut butter and jam sandwiches
  • Chocolate
  • Bananas
  • Hard-boiled eggs

As you can see, food is fuel – and it seems that slow releasing carbs, healthy fats and a lot of protein is a common theme amongst the professionals. That and a good helping of sugar of course!

The types of food you eat during game play has to be small, portable and bite-size, ideally something you can easily fit into your electric golf trolley for easy transportation and access as and when you need it. Anything too big or messy will get in the way and slow you down, so it’s important to ensure your more substantial meals are enjoyed before a game and afterwards to help you recover and avoid any fatigue.

So – what types of foods should you eat before and after a game of golf?

It’s well-known that protein is a must to keep us going, so if you’re planning to spend the day on the links – it’s important to make sure your meal beforehand is rich in protein. Combining a healthy protein such as chicken, fish or tofu with complex carbohydrates that will release energy slowly across the day is the best combination to start with. Complex carbohydrates such as fruits, beans and vegetables will help to fill you up and will also improve your energy and concentration during game play.

Of course, you want to avoid overeating. This is a common mistake of novice players who want to fuel up before they begin their game, only to find themselves too full to perform well. Avoiding greasy or fatty meals can also help you to feel less tired and sluggish as you take to the course.

Once you’ve completed a few personal bests and are heading home for the night, you are most likely going to feel famished. But what sort of meal is going to help fill you up and heal your body from such a physical day? Something high in carbohydrates is important, we’re talking pastas, wholegrain bread and plenty of healthy fats as well. But, most importantly? Make sure you remain hydrated throughout and drink plenty after your game is over too.

Make eating during game play easier

If you’re not well prepared it can feel like a chore to bring healthy snacks with you during a day on the green. For many, it can lead to not regularly eating and drinking, which is a fast-track route to feeling unwell and underperforming.

A golf bag or manual golf trolley can be a good way to store your snacks, but if you’re looking to take everything you might need with you – without the physical strain of carting it around – you need an electric golf trolley. With the storage capabilities and the power to carry it without you needing to lift a finger, this is great solution to ensuring you remain energised and firing from all cylinders during your game.
