When to get an adjustable bed – is an adjustable bed right for you?

Adjustable beds are excellent at improving mobility, and there are several situations where getting one makes perfect sense.
If you struggle to get in and out of bed, or sitting up in bed is painful or impossible, then an adjustable bed will transform your life.
At the press of a button on a remote, adjustable beds let you change your leg and head position. There are hundreds of positions, from a 120-degree angle for reading in bed to a 160-degree angle for slightly inclined sleeping.
This article explores when to get an adjustable bed based on different scenarios, helping you figure out if one is right for you.
Let’s jump in!
The health benefits of adjustable beds
This study found that elevated head sleeping reduces sleep apnea by preventing airway collapse, while this study found the same for apnea and snoring.
Additionally, adjustable beds let you quickly raise your legs, and sleeping with feet elevated improves oedema (feet swelling).
We also know that poor sleep impacts our metabolism, immunity, memory, cognitive ability, and physical performance. If an adjustable bed helps you sleep better, you will feel healthier and more energetic, helping you live your life.
There’s also a strong chance that an adjustable bed will eliminate your lower and upper back pain, provided a flat sleep surface causes it (however, this can also be caused by an old mattress).

When to get an adjustable bed
While adjustable beds are primarily associated with old age and injuries, anyone can benefit from them. Sleeping elevated will open your airway and make it easier to get in and out of bed, helping you maintain comfort levels.
Here are some of the main reasons people get an adjustable bed:
Adjustable beds for old age
Let’s face it – getting old means getting stiffer. Getting in and out of bed is more complex, and we can get pain in our joints like never before. An adjustable bed gives you complete control over your sleep position to relieve discomfort.
If you feel your joints, muscles, and bones more in old age, an adjustable bed could make sleeping much more comfortable.
Adjustable beds for couples
If both of you would benefit from an adjustable sleep surface, the great thing about adjustable beds is you can get a king or super king model like the Recline-A-Bed twin (pictured below) with adjustment for both sides, giving two people complete control.
Although expensive, king and super king adjustable beds ensure that neither you nor your partner has to compromise on bedtime comfort.
Adjustable beds for snoring
Studies show that elevated head sleeping reduces snoring frequency and intensity, making an adjustable bed an excellent anti-snoring investment.
While you could chuck a few pillows under your head, the acute angle change between your neck and torso could give you upper and lower back pain. It’s better to get an adjustable bed and fine-tune your sleeping angle.

Adjustable beds for mobility
If getting in and out of bed is difficult for you, an adjustable bed could make it easier by reducing the range of motion you have to make – it can prop you up, so all you need to do is shimmy your legs in and out of bed.
Adjustable beds are great for mobility, which is why every hospital – and most care homes – have them. Don’t be afraid to give one a try!
Adjustable beds post-surgery
Adjustable beds provide the perfect comfort solution if recent surgery has made it impossible to sleep comfortably on a flat surface. Doctors often recommend elevated sleep following neck surgery and slipped discs.
An adjustable bed will help to take the edge off your ailments, especially when you have pain in places you’ve never felt before post-surgery.
