Why Bother With Background Checks As A Small Business?

September 29, 2021

As a small business, some protocols and routines can seem like things that only need to concern corporate giants. You might think that background checks are one of those. After all, only the big dogs need to complete an intense multi-stage vetting and interviewing process to sort hundreds of prospective employees, right?

That is a mistake.

Background screening isn’t only helpful in weeding out those who may have lied on their resume, and it certainly isn’t only helpful when rooting through hundreds of applicants. Ultimately, background checks are about ensuring the person you hire is truthful and trustworthy, whether you are hiring a thousand or just one.

This post will discuss why you should utilise background checks even if you run a small business.

It Could Save You Money

As a small business, keeping a tight budget is integral to your success. So, understandably, ‘how much does a background check cost?’ will be the central question running through your mind. Honestly, though, your focus should be on how much money you could save by completing the proper checks rather than how much it could initially cost.

For example, imagine you have just hired an outstanding new employee who checks all of your boxes at an interview and seems to be a perfect fit for your work culture. You don’t bother with a background check because they seem the real deal. However, six months down the line, you discover that they have defrauded you out of thousands, and they have a history of doing so.

This scenario might sound outlandish, but it really happens at an alarming rate. The proper background check would have alerted you to their criminal history, and you would never have hired them. Don’t cut corners when it comes to who you introduce to your team.

It Ensures You’re in Line With Legal Requirements

It is natural for a smaller business to be more out of the loop than more giant corporations. You’re dealing with the day-to-day, trying to figure out how to stay afloat while still maintaining necessary growth. It’s a lot of plates to spin at once, so legal jargon might feel like the least of your worries.

It Ultimately Protects Your Current Staff

However, legal regulations are there for a reason, and failure to comply can have severe repercussions. By completing a background check via the proper channels, you can ensure you stay in line with critical elements of employment law, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Trying to do everything yourself is a surefire way to make mistakes that could land you in hot water.

Lastly, but by no means least, background checks protect those that you already employ. Without background screening, you could be introducing anybody to your team.

At best, this could mean introducing someone woefully unqualified for the role. At worst, you could be throwing a potentially violent criminal into the mix (though not everybody with a criminal record is a risk).

You owe it to your current team to provide them with competent, honest coworkers. Anything less than that may drive them to other jobs or could even result in injury. Don’t take the risk.

Background Checks Are Not Just for Large Companies

All businesses benefit from the right screening processes. Don’t cut corners because you feel you already have too much on your plate or don’t need to because you’re only a small team. Employees make or break a company, so you need to perform your due diligence.
