6 Ways To Improve Your Marriage and Avoid Divorce

September 30, 2021

According to recent statistics, around 42% of marriages in the UK end in divorce. While people don’t go into marriage thinking it will end in divorce, sadly, along the way, issues arise that lead to the relationship breaking down and both parties not being able to resolve them for many reasons.

While divorce might be inevitable for some, for those who want to avoid dissolving their union and would be willing to try different ways to repair what appears to be broken, there are ways you can work together to save your marriage and see how you can move forward in life.

Therapy

The main purpose of couples therapy is to assess your suitability in your relationship and look for ways to stay together in a healthy and loving relationship. Therapy will only work if both parties are willing to undertake together with the same goal. However, treatment doesn’t always guarantee you will stay together. Couples therapy can help you have a safe space to talk with a qualified therapist trained to help you work through your issues. In some cases, it can help you identify what your life will evolve into and whether the relationship has a place in that future.

Make Your Marriage A Priority

Your spouse should be the most crucial person in your world, and you should make an effort to treat each other this way. Focus on what they want from the marriage and work hard to make sure those demands are met where possible.

Communicate

Frequently, poor communication is the start of problems and people not being able to sit down and have the essential talks is a catalyst to further action. If you cannot say the words out loud, maybe you can find a way around this and write them down, send an email or text to help you both get things off your chest and out into the open.

Learn How To Repair and Argument

Happy couples know how to end an argument or repair a situation before it spirals out of control. You can try to mend a relationship by utilising humour, showing concern (“I realise that this is difficult for you”), working together (“We’ll face this problem together”), agreeing to back down, and showing general understanding for your partner’s feelings. Maybe you can both agree to take a 20-minute pause if an argument gets out of hand.

Revisit The Early Days

Life can get in the way of love. This is a common theme in many marriage problems. You simply both get too busy not to pay attention to each other or acknowledge needs within the marriage. Look at what made you fall in love with each other when you first met and what you enjoyed doing together. Find that spark that connected you by committing to spending more time together doing things you want. Then commit to making plans for date nights, spending time alone, going away together and so on.

Focus On The Good Things

It can be all too easy to focus on what you perceive your spouse to be doing wrong or irritating you. But have you ever tried focusing on the good parts? Look deeper at those little things that take place that may be overlooked. It can be something as minor as making sure the heating is switched on before you get out of bed or de-icing the car in winter before you go to work. It is the small actions that sometimes proves to be the way to save or improve a marriage, so finding out what they do for you instead of what they don’t do can help you view your wedding in a different light.
