How to choose the right paintbrush
I know what you’re thinking!
A paintbrush is a paintbrush, right?
How wrong could you be!
You get exactly what you pay for so when you see the value pack of paintbrushes at your local DIY retailer please resist and have a look at the better quality brushes and then decide what to buy in relation to the paint you are going to use.
Remember a quality brush will do the job quickly and give a wow finish too.
Here is my list of brushes needed for all surfaces.
1. Woodwork – You can paint woodwork interior or exterior in oil based or acrylic based paint. Should you decide on an oil based paint then use a 100% bristle brush. For acrylic based paint use a 100% synthetic brush for oil based paints. Always clean your brushes in white spirit. Acrylic based paints can be cleaned in water.
2. Walls and ceilings are usually painted in emulsion which is a water based paint. This means a 100% synthetic brush is perfect for the job and of course a roller. I’d use a medium pile roller for nearly all surfaces for an even finish.
3. Exterior walls come in all different surfaces, but for the first coat on all surfaces I would use a 4.75 inch x1inch masonary brush. It is particularly good for pebble dash and rough cast finish walls.
4. Sheds or any wood panel staining – The best brush for the job is a wood block brush for sheds which gives quick and complete coverage. For panels use a wood care brush.
There are many makes of brushes on the market, but I have a some makes which are very affordable and will give years of services if looked after and cleaned properly.
My top three makes of brushes are:
1. Hamilton – They are easily available at DIY retailers or online
2. Harris platinum brushes which are also available at DIY retailers or online
3. Purdy brushes which are generally available online although some retailers do stock them

I'm the sort who buys the cheapest I can find, but my dad always insisted on the Harris brushes so I've tended to trade up with DIY products.
