What and Why I Write
When I first started blogging just over two years ago, I didn’t have a set idea or plan what I wanted my blog to be and I had not ever really done any writing in my life. I really had no idea how to construct a post that would be engaging, interesting and maybe get readers coming back looking for more.
What I did know was that I was particularly articulate. I’m not a trained journalist or anything vaguely resembling this. I was never going to have a best selling book or win the booker prize for literature.
What I did know was that if I was going to leave a blog footprint for my children and something that hopefully my children are proud of long after I have gone, then I needed to write from the heart. I wanted to be totally honest, and not hold back any of my feelings and always above all else keep it real.
I never wanted to appear fake or write something for a reaction and I truly I have never done that. I don’t have the benefit of an english language degree and an unlimited vocabulary, but I have passion about the main topic of my blog which is my wife, children and mum. They are without a doubt so very important to me and I would do anything for them.
This may sound extreme, but I genuinely mean this. I would give my life for any of them if needed.
It’s interesting that when I read a blog post by anybody I can instantly tell if they have trained in some form of writing and if I’m honest about halfway through I bore of it because it lacks soul. It feels lifeless and just doesn’t feel real, almost like somebody is writing for the person that owns the blog. It begins to read like a newspaper article.
Writing has to to have passion and in my humble opinion that only comes if you are writing from the heart.
Over the last two years my blog has evolved. I started writing about DIY and parenting, but over a period of time it changed from probably less DIY to more parenting, but also issues that I found interesting, sometimes annoying and quite often irritating.
The more immersed I became in the blogging world I found some parts of it particularly annoying, and I’ve never been able to keep my mouth shut! I would write about things that I found to be annoying me and I wouldn’t call these posts controversial, but I believe that they possibly divided opinion. That for the record was never my intention.
So nowadays I still extensively write about my family which I always will. I write a smaller amount about DIY, after all how many ways is there to paint a wall, but I write about issues and subjects that interest me and some of the injustices I see online on a regular basis, and of course I have been lucky to write an element of sponsored work.
After I have written a post I try my best not to mess or edit it too much because what I have written has come from my heart and I don’t want to lose that just for the sake of adding a few words, that, ok, may make it read better or sound better, but I feel it will lose the reality of what I am trying to convey.
That may be naive of me, but it has to be real otherwise what’s the point? I know you can add keywords and phrases to hopefully engage and increase readership, but I have not got a clue how that works. Hopefully my honesty comes through to engage the reader.
I would like to think that I haven’t stop writing with passion. I really hope I engage with anybody that reads my blog. I hope they feel the love I have for my family and enjoy reading my posts. I believe my writing has improved and I always do my best to convey as well as I can what I’m trying to say.
In the new year I will be making some changes to my blog. I’m going to be a millionaire, haha!
In my dreams!
Seriously though, I am changing things around because I have become more focused and know what direction I want my blog to take and what I want to do with my writing.
One of the most wonderful things about having a blog is you really don’t need a degree or to be a journalist or best selling author. All you need is a passion for the subject matter of your blog. If you are new to blogging I would say to anybody to have passion, honesty and always keep it real, and believe and have confidence in your writing, and write for yourself first and foremost. After that the rest really is easy.
I would love to know why you write and what is the biggest driving force for you.

Great read mate. Nobody could ever accuse you of lacking passion. I agree that anyone and everyone can blog. If you can engage your audience qualifications and training don’t matter. If anything, I blog to escape my profession haha.

Really love this post. I always feel the passion in your posts. No one can doubt the love you have for your family or your writing. I’m going to keep reading because you inspire confidence and passion through your posts (even though I’m one of those with degrees in English and literature!). You are also hugely supportive with your feedback on #ThatFridayLinky. I will always be a supporter of Twin Mummy and Daddy and DIYDaddyblog. That’s a given!

I write because I’ve always enjoyed writing and have found a subject that should provide me with endless material! Its humbling that there are people out there that find what I say interesting.

I try not to over edit a post too, I think they’re much better when you write whatever it is you want to say, even if it’s just a ramble, and leave it be! #bestandworst

Great post and you sum up exactly why you’re such a great blogger for me. You have passion, your writing has depth, honesty and soul. You write from your heart.
These are the things I appreciate in a good writer. Yes I love extensive vocab and impeccable grammar but are these REALLY necessary? No, I don’t think they are. They won’t engage me more than rawness will.
Nige, I really mean it when I say you’re one of my fave writers and I’m looking forward to seeing the direction your blog takes in the New Year. #bestandworst

I just wanted to write and didn’t have a clue really. I also wanted to make a diary and memories for my little ones. It’s funny how things change and your blog does evolve. Like you, I’m not a trained writer and will never write a book but it’s fun and I will keep doing it. Keep at it and love your blog. Thanks for sharing with #bestandworst x

I’m the same, I’ve never trained as a writer. My background academically is science and I was a banker, as far from writing as you can get. I use 10 words when 1 can do. But I write from the heart and I write for me. Those posts have always been the best received for me, because they are a little bit of me given up for my blog I think.
