10 Crucial Things You Can Do To Reduce Back Pain

October 14, 2022

Ah, back pain! Back pain can affect everybody. We all have a day from time to time when our lower back can feel a little sore. More often than not, you only need to take a painkiller, and you can carry on with your day.

But what if back pain becomes a recurring issue? Did you know that back pain is one of the most common complaints when it comes to long-lasting or chronic pain? Unfortunately, back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, even if you never sustained any injury in the back muscles or skeletal structure. As a result, back pain is very common, so common in fact that most people simply associate it with getting older. Back pain is normal at my age, you think. But you’d be wrong! Back pain is not linked to the ageing process. Regardless of your age, there is plenty you can do to alleviate pain in your day-to-day life.

1. Self-care

Perhaps, the most important thing you can do about your health is embrace self-care. Learning to focus on what makes you feel good, both physically and emotionally, can significantly reduce back pain by ensuring that:

  • You can identify and prevent psychological factors such as depression
  • You learn to listen to your body
  • You take care of yourself and don’t ignore potential issues
  •  In your journey to reduce back pain, prioritize self-care, and explore the benefits of cold therapy as a valuable resource for relief and recovery.

Self-care can be a useful tool to prevent many health complaints as you become mindful about making healthy choices.

2. Have a regular workout routine

Working out is not just a matter of losing weight. Working out regularly maintains the muscular and skeletal structure of your body as well as its mobility. Indeed, reduced mobility can arise when you lead a sedentary lifestyle. This will affect your range of motion, which can lead to back pain. Additionally, failure to exercise your muscles will inevitably lead to muscle loss. Weak back muscles can struggle to host your posture without straining, which is where the pain can come from.

There is no need to visit the gym every day or to focus solely on back muscle workouts. Being physically active, even only 30 minutes a day, can help maintain essential physical functions in the body and prevent pain.

3. Trust a specialist

What if you’ve never noticed back pain before, but it’s appeared recently for an unknown reason? It is worth making an osteo appointment to discuss your concerns. An osteopath can help identify the cause of the pain and pinpoint dysfunctions within your body. Osteopathy acts as a holistic approach to the body, helping release tensions and reveal the deep cause of lingering problems.

An osteo can help you find relief through professional massage, cupping therapy, or even joint manipulation. More importantly, the specialist can approach the body as a whole, which means they can tailor their response to your exact needs.

4. Massage the area

Muscle soreness is not uncommon, and it can linger for a few days. Sometimes, you can experience lower back pain as a result of a specific activity. If you’ve been helping someone move out and carrying heavy boxes for the day, you can expect some level of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS for short) in your back. Depending on your fitness level, the soreness can remain for several days up to weeks. However, DOMS is a normal phenomenon and one that can disappear quickly with the appropriate care routine.

You can ask a loved one to provide a back massage that will help soothe the muscles in the area. Alternatively, if nobody feels confident about massaging your back, you can also take a warm bath to provide muscle relaxation.
