The first few weeks at home with the girls

November 26, 2014
After
getting through the first night the reality of the girls being at
home was beginning to hit home!

The
routine that the special care unit had drummed into us was becoming
invaluable. The girls fed every three hours and their medication had
to be added to every bottle of milk.

We
recorded everything by keeping a diary of every ounce of milk they
drank along with the times they drank them!

M
was beginning to suffer very badly from silent reflux. It was
terrible for her, but also frustrating for us as parents. After
taking her to see a doctor, she was initially prescribed Gaviscon and
also another medication was prescribed which need to be added into
her milk too. It definitely did the trick and she started to feed so
much better.

My
wife was I have to say brilliant. Through the night she would dream
feed both girls and I have to admit I never got up to feed them!
Thank you hunny!

I
would always get up with the girls anything from 5am onward to feed
them and my wife would have an few extra hours in bed before I went
to work.

I remember on one such occasion we used to always wash their eyes with
cooled boiled water because they would on occasion become sticky. One
day I got what I thought was cooled boiled water and started to wash
R’s eyes. She started getting upset and then I realised that it
wasn’t cooled boiled water it was actually Milton! Thankfully, R was
ok, but it took me many months to tell my wife as I was so
embarrassed!

In
the first few days the midwives came and visited the girls. They
weighed them and both girls were doing really well.

The
health visitor also came in the first week, but to be honest we found
her of no use and it was the last time she visited because it was
what we wanted. We made sure that we took the girls to the baby
clinic regularly though to be weight and checked over.

Life
was starting to settle down nicely and the girls slept well at night.
Overall they were doing very well.

It
was still early days and it would turn out that having twins over the
next few months was to become very tiring!

We’ve
never asked anybody for any help, but the time would soon come in
which were going to have to.

Parenting is possibly the hardest job anyone can ever do, but it's the most rewarding. Your girls are just gorgeous #binkylinky
