Being a dad means that you do not only have to get things from high shelves, but you are also the first one anyone comes to when something needs fixing around the house. Although you are not a professional, you can consider some of these repairs done as DIY projects to undertake. To help you, here are four home repairs you can do by yourself.
- Plumbing repairs
Plumbing issues are common mishaps in the household. Sometimes, grease and hair clog up the drain preventing water from going down it. Such a problem can be fixed easily by using the good old plunger. You can also seal a leaky pipe with a foam sealant. There are other repairs you can do without hiring the service of a professional, like changing a washer or even replacing a toilet!
- Wall repairs
Are your drywalls damaged? Well, the good news is these can be fixed easily. You can quickly fix the holes and cracks in your drywalls by using a fast-setting drywall compound.
Your kids may have used the walls as their canvas or left little dirty handprints all over it. Or over the years, harsh conditions may have damaged the paint job of walls, causing it to peel or discolour. You could spritz some bleach and clean, but if this doesn’t do the job, it means you would have to repaint. It’s a straightforward project, but it may be time-consuming. Be sure to have all your related equipment (paintbrushes, primer, ladder, and paint) and select paint that can be washed if dirtied and can last for an extended time.
- Furniture repairs
Another DIY home repairs project you can take on is the cleaning and fixing of your furniture- no need to hire a carpenter. Got a wobbly kitchen or dining hall chair or table? This is a simple home fix. Tightening a few screws could make all the difference. Stuck or stiff drawers can be loosened by either putting some oil on the sides for lubrication, if metallic. In some situations, lube may not be enough but fear not. You can replace them by buying drawer slides similar to the old ones. That way, you will just be putting a new one where the former used to be so you can easily see where you’d have to screw in or glue.
- Electrical repairs
While a professional electrician should do most electrical repairs, there are still some that you can add to your ‘to-do’ list of DIY home repairs. One of them is the changing of burnt light bulbs. An easy everyday task- you don’t even need a tutorial! Using a few online videos and blogs, you can learn how to replace or install a light switch safely, or fix a broken (or lose) lighting fixture.
