4 habits that are driving up your motoring costs

February 10, 2016
Most people like to think that they’re a good driver, or at the very least, not too bad. In reality though, lots of us have some bad habits that are actually costing us money every time we hit the road. In this post, I hope to highlight some of the worst habits and look at how changing a few things can help make your money go further.

Letting your car insurance automatically renew

Even if you’re strapped for time, it’s important to shop around for insurance and not to automatically accept the quote that your existing insurer gives you. An efficient way to find competitive quotes is to use a broker site like Chill Insurance Ireland. This process takes a matter of moments and it could help you get a better deal. In fact, you could potentially save yourself a small fortune!

Leaving the engine running

If one of my friends is picking me up from my house at a certain time, you can be guaranteed that I’ll be running late. I’ll be running around like a headless chicken, getting ready and grabbing all the things I need. All the while, they’ll be sat outside with the engine running. Leaving the engine running like this can waste money, and it’s bad for the environment as well.

Riding the clutch and revving

When I’m on a driving lesson with my instructor, he always makes me put my handbrake on at lights – but I know lots of people prefer to ride the clutch and hold the biting point. This is a big no-no as it wastes petrol and isn’t good for your car.

Not planning your journey

We’re all busy and sometimes we prefer to jump in the car without thinking. If you’re going for a day trip somewhere, why not look into the different travel options before you set off? Once you’ve considered how much it will cost you to drive to your destination and pay for parking, you might find it’s a lot cheaper to go by train or bus. If you do decide to travel by car, take a little time to plan your route so you don’t clock up unnecessary miles. Using your sat nav or a directions app on your phone can save you time and money.

I hope this blog post has given you plenty of food for thought. Have you got any tips you’d like to share with me?
