5 Creative Ways to Feed Your Kids a Healthier Diet

June 14, 2020

Kids are notoriously averse to eating their vegetables and eating a healthy diet in general. Parents often fight an uphill battle to ensure their child gets all the nutrients they need.

Want to expand the dietary repertoire of a fussy eater? You may find some of the following unorthodox approaches to feeding your children helpful if you are struggling in this noble endeavour!

  1. Buy Grass-Fed Beef

Eating grass-fed meat as opposed to factory-farmed animals is not only much more humane and environmentally sustainable but also has been shown to have many health benefits. This type of meat can often be challenging to find in grocery stores, but you may not be aware that you can buy grass fed beef online. This method saves a trip to the grocery store and will help your child to eat healthier without implementing a considerable lifestyle change.

  1. Visit Your Local Farmer’s Market

Local farmers are much less likely to use harmful chemicals and pesticides on their produce. Additionally, locally sourced food tends to be fresher. Buying from farmer’s markets also supports the local economy directly. This method of acquiring food is more environmentally friendly because it does not have to be transported as far to reach its destination. These markets often even have family-friendly activities and could be a fun place to take your children.

  1. Involve Your Kids in the Process

If you plop food down in front of your kids and they do not know what it is or where it came from, they may not be very interested in eating it. Consider taking your child to the grocery store and showing them where they can find different food groups. Let them watch you cook and have them be your little helper. If your child can take some ownership of the food that your family is preparing, then they will be much more likely to eat it.

  1. Avoid Placing Certain Foods Off-Limits

When you disallow a particular food, that often makes the desire for that food even more intense. As a result, when your child can get their hands on that food, they will eat all they can and show no moderation.

Instead, try to instil healthy eating patterns. Let your kids know that they cannot have cookies for every meal, but a cookie every other day will not hurt them. Labelling foods with an absolute moral judgment can lead to unhealthy perceptions of the purpose of food in life.

  1. Utilize Role Models

We all know that a little white lie has never hurt anyone, and telling a small one may even encourage your child to eat healthfully. For example, if your child enjoys basketball and looks up to Michael Jordan, then you could suggest that Jordan always eats his vegetables so your child should too.

In the same vein, children tend to follow the actions of people they see around them. Make sure that they see you eating all your vegetables and not eating ice cream for every meal. Merely setting a positive example for your child to follow can work wonders in stubborn children.

It can be incredibly challenging to encourage healthy eating in children, but that does not mean you cannot have fun with it. You may need to experiment with several different tactics before finding a set of effective strategies for your family. Each child is different, and some may respond much more strongly to helping in the cooking process, while others will love discovering that their favourite TV show character eats broccoli.

The most important thing is never to give up because instilling a healthy diet is one of the best things you can do to safeguard your child’s health throughout life.
