5 Things You Shouldn’t DIY

September 9, 2021

Bootstrapping is brilliant and we’re full of admiration for those of us who learn and then master the millions of things that you can genuinely do yourself.

But on the flip side, there are some tasks in your life that you can’t apply the DIY ethos too – those tricky, technical and sometimes downright dangerous jobs that are best left to the experts.

If you’re prone to overestimate your abilities in different spheres, we’ve collated a handy list which should keep you on the right path – without any further ado, here are five things you shouldn’t DIY!

  1. Electrical work

Here’s the shocking truth – it’s best that any home electrical work more complex than changing a plug should probably be left to a seasoned tradesperson. So whether you, or your mate who finished half his electrician apprenticeship before being mysteriously paid off, think you can ‘have a bash’ at wiring your living room, just don’t. Call in pros from TrustATrader instead!

  1. Learning to drive

Obviously as a learner driver, you would never go out onto the road on your own. But it’s probably not best to DIY your learning by only taking lessons from a friend or relative either – you’ll pick up their bad habits and a lot of their techniques will be outdated. If you want to pass your test, trust a qualified driving instructor.

  1. Treating depression

Mild symptoms of anxiety might be alleviated with the likes of mindfulness apps. But if you’re ever struggling to cope with life, feel down about yourself, your relationships and the world around you, and the things which used to give you pleasure don’t, you should call a support service like Samaritans and consult talk to your GP. Mental health conditions are often unseen, but they’re as real and damaging as physical illnesses.

  1. Building a conservatory

If you’re not a joiner, attempting to build a conservatory is probably folly, no matter how easy it looks. This is a major project which has been attempted by amateurs, but not without several thumbs nailed to planks of wood in the process and an end product that looks like the house the second little pig built. These days, all types of terrific conservatories and orangeries are available – but none of them are built by enthusiastic amateurs.

  1. Dentistry

It should be painfully obvious that you don’t DIY dental work. You should leave it to the experts, especially when you want to get dental veneers syracuse ny. But you would be amazed at how many people order home dentistry kits online and try to fill cavities and perform all sorts of advanced treatments with tiny mirrors balanced on their knees. If you’re doing DIY teeth because of a phobia, seek help and if you’re doing it because it sounds like a sensible challenge, also seek help. Once you’ve come to your senses, talk to trusted pros like Portman Smile Clinic.

There you have it – a quintet of tasks you shouldn’t DIY. Being self-sufficient is super, but sometimes the best way to help yourself is by asking someone else for a hand.
