A New Language: Children’s Language
When you make that massive decision to have children there are a number of things you probably didn’t plan upon changing.
One such thing is you start to re-write the English language! Everything prior to children that you thought was what you called things is re-named for children.
Omg! This actually makes me laugh on a regular basis as I talk to my five year old twins that I begin to think it’s normal and I say it so naturally it frightens me, haha!
So here is a list of things that have been re-named in our home in the last five years.
1. The multipack of galaxy chocolate is no longer known as galaxy in our home and I have been totally brainwashed by my five year old twins that it is now known as break-up chocolate. In fact when I ask the girls I always say would you like break-up chocolate.
2. McDonald’s is probably the most well known fast food chain in the world today. We have renamed them! When the girls have a treat to go there it will be forever known as OLD McDonald’s.
3. Another one we use on a regular basis is squeezy yoghurt. These of course were formally known as frubes.
4. Squish used to be known as squash! Now I blame my wife for this one, as she has always called it squish!
5. I love the way M say I love you at bedtime. You say I love you and she comes back with poo-poo this is really quite frightening how normal this is. Haha!
I love the way children make up their own language for numerous things that they want and amazingly we then as adults go along with it and it becomes part of our vocabulary too.
I would love to know what items in your household have had the name changed by your children and it has now become the word to use, and the norm!

Ah, yeah, I get this. Mango juice is now jango muice. There’s a breakfast cereal called benefit my kids call Befenit for some reason. Oh, and just about anything can be an ooojema boojema.

Anything icky in our home, such as when the kids blow their noses or have a loose poo is known as ‘ukavee’ … my Welsh grandmother used to say it when I was a kid, so it may stem from Welsh, But with a totally different spelling! I started it with Fidget. Now we use it for anything horrible. We also use ‘poopa’ for a bruise or cut or generally when we hurt ourselves. That one comes from their Spanish grandmother and their mum.

When I was working as a child minder we often drove past McDonald’s and several of the children referred to it as old McDonald’s, my youngest who had speach delay called orange juice Annie and biscuits were mum mum’s!

I asked our builder recently whether he’d like a coffee or some fizzy pop. Fizzy pop? Shame he went for the coffee, otherwise I could have served it in a plastic beaker with a curly straw!
