Bloggers Selling Their Souls For Easy Money? I Don’t Think So
This year has been incredible for me. I have been named the number 2 dad blogger in the UK by Vuelio and shortlisted for an award and numerous features on many websites. First of all I want to point out it’s not luck, I have spent three years and many hours working hard to produce the best content I can and thankfully people read and enjoy it, well at least I get comments to say they enjoyed it.

Along with these achievements that have come my way this year, it’s made me more visible to PR’s and more importantly brands. Nowadays I get approached by large brands like Iceland, Asda, McDonald’s, Confused.com, to name a few. This is truly amazing and a little mind boggling considering ten months ago I was lucky enough to be offered £20 worth of amazon vouchers for a lot of work. Times have definitely changed!
That’s not to say I have not worked for £30 because I have. You have to start somewhere, and I have never forgotten that. It’s a long slow process and by keeping at it I am now reaping the rewards.
This year what I have noticed is a number of people saying things like if you work with this brand or that brand you are selling your soul for a quick buck! I believe that this is total nonsense.
These brands pay very good money and if you do a good job, produce a well written post and give good promotion they will come back to you for more work. Surely that’s all anybody wants?
What I can’t work out, as said by some bloggers, is why they think this is selling your soul?
It’s business and any business has a price. As long as it is in keeping with the theme of your blog where is the problem? The truth is there is no problem. I have set my own standards. I don’t work with gambling sites nor do I work for any sex, dating or alcohol sites, but that is my choice. I don’t have a problem if bloggers want to work with these type of businesses. It’s personal choice.
It appears to me that some bloggers will only work with certain brands because in their eyes they’re reputable and trustworthy, yet if they see a blogger working with a brand that they wouldn’t work with, they’re suddenly selling their soul. Who is deciding this? What makes one brand any less trustworthy or reputable than another?
What gives bloggers the right to say that? Some brands simply suit some blogs better than others and usually the brand has done its homework about who they approach.
Another thing I have noticed recently is bloggers posting in blogging Facebook groups asking if other bloggers are doing a specific campaign, and asking how much did you manage to screw out of them.
This is totally unethical and shocking business practice. I am a self employed painter and decorator and on many occasions I’m not the only person quoting for a job. It would be like me asking other people how much are you charging. Just not done, totally wrong on every level.
Blogging is a very large industry made up of thousands and thousands of individuals and it is without a doubt generating a lot of money. But blogging has no standards, because there are so many individuals it’s impossible to have standards.
Each individual will set their own standards and of course the truth is some bloggers simply don’t have any standards which will play into the hands of PR’s and brands to not pay a fair going rate to many bloggers who nowadays under value themselves, and simply don’t know their worth to brands. To improve standards within the blogging world you would need a governing body laying down ground rules, which I personally think will never happen.
As I have said I have worked incredibly hard to achieve what I have with my blog, and I have no qualms about working with brands whoever they are. The truth is I enjoy earning the money, it’s nice and it helps my bank balance and actually gives my family some luxuries which we wouldn’t normally have. What’s wrong with that? Well in my opinion, absolutely nothing.
So the next time I read a blogger saying they won’t work with this brand or that brand, because they would be selling their soul, well if I’m honest maybe they have never been asked and is it because they are just a bit jealous that some bloggers are working with them and they’re not? Also the fact that they’re getting paid well for it. Don’t knock something until you have tried it. Don’t sit on your high horse shouting the odds because it just looks like the green eyed monster is at work. So next time you judge a blogger for working with a particular brand maybe you shouldn’t. It’s their blog and their choice what they do. The same as it’s your choice as to how you run your blog.
I would love to know your thoughts.

You just keep on working hard and proving that bloggers can be both reputable AND make money. #ThatFridayLinky

I think that in some cases there is a bit of jealousy from those that aren’t getting these offers. I’ve also seen bigger bloggers complain that some of the littler fish are accepting less money and bringing down the amounts offered. I’ve always felt that PRs are paying for perceived audience. If they don’t want to pay a lot to reach a ton of people, its their business if they want to offer less to somebody else and reach fewer. Seems simple business sense to me. I’ve shilled a pretty wide variety of products. I don’t feel like I’m spammy and have a few extra bucks in my pocket so I don’t really care what another blogger might think of my practices #thatfridaylinky

Well you’re obviously doing something right, your work is fantastic! The problem is, nobody seems to be able to just get on with things without having an opinion on everyone else. Just keep doing what you’re doing. I never get to do reviews really as I’m living overseas, nobody wants to send anything to Tanzania haha! However, in a few days I come to Uk and I’m very excited to have some products there waiting for me 🙂 x x #ThatLinkyFriday

Great post Nige. I always make decisions based on what’s best for my family and our circumstances. No one ever knows why you might work with certain brands or why you might do it for free or little in return. Everyone has their reasons for running their blog the way they do.
You’re at the top and deservedly so 👍🏻

You have put this perfectly. I have noticed this a lot in a lot of the blogging forums I’m in and it makes me roll my eyes. Each to their own is my motto, you do what you gotta do to put bread on the table in my opinion.

I love hearing successful blogging stories like yours, where you’ve worked really hard and are now reaping the benefits, and deservedly so. I totally agree that it’s a personal choice about which brands to work with, it’s none of anyone else’s business, if it works for you then that’s all that matters. #ThatFridayLinky

Good on you for getting so far! Just goes to show that hard work and dedication does pay off. I don’t thin you’re selling your soul for working with companies others wouldn’t. It’s personal preference, and those people are missing out on potentially great work! I guess it just means those companies will come back to you and give you the work! #ThatFridayLinky

I accepted lots of low value items for review and several low paid posts in the early days and then read of others getting 5-10 times the amount so now I am more picky and make sure it is an equal partnership of promotion and exposure for me and the brand #thatfridaylinky

I totally agree – it is up to the individual who they choose to work with! I think you have also hit the nail on the head that there is sometimes a little bit of jealousy behind certain comments….Great post. #ThatFridayLinky

The internet world is full of judgment – especially when it come to parenting and blogging… People feel like they have a right to have an opinion on everything that you do.
I think it’s lovely that you are able to make an income for your family by blogging. It’s up to you to decide what brands you want to represent in order to do so. If I don’t like a brand that you are writing about, then I’m probably not going to read a post about it…that’s my right as a reader.
You keep taking care of your family and your blog. I will continue to help by reading and clicking around the site.
Everyone else may do what they please. 🙂

Congrats on the awards! I think some brands offer very little compensation to bloggers, offering that old chestnut-exposure. I myself have been offered very little money for some posts, which is disheartening, but I’ll keep plugging away until someday maybe I can earn what I’m worth. It takes a lot of work producing good quality blog posts and sadly, some brands just don’t realise this.

I’ve not worked with brands but I suppose it’s like commercials. There’s some brands I’d work for and some I wouldn’t. I also think who people work with impacts their reputation. Your decisions reflect who you are. Nectar has started working with the Daily Mail, so I will no longer use Sainsbury’s. I don’t care about the financial aspect. #ThatFridayLinky

Super chuffed for you Nige and it’s all well earned! Thank you for writing this because when you keep seeing these kinds of comments so consistently it can get a bit tedious and actually make you doubt yourself! We all have to start somewhere and I think some people forget this. Working hard is key and you are proof that if you put the graft in, you reap the rewards. Thanks for being inspirational! 🙂 #ThatFridayLinky

I completely agree! I don’t tend to listen to other comments on companies. I don’t have many companies companies asking me at the moment but if I did and it fitted with my blog and I liked them etc then I would take the opportunity.
Well done on getting to where you are now! #ThatFridayLinky

Well said! The other thing is, sometimes people just need the money! I have taken less than I usually would for a post and worked with brands I wouldn’t usually work with. Why? Because it put food on the table when there was no other way of doing so. It would be wrong of anyone to judge the work another blogger does to feed their kids. Congratulations on all your success, it is well deserved!

Very well said! Now that I’m a SAHM I don’t really have the luxury of turning down brands who want to work with me if they’re offering a reasonable rate. Quite honestly I need the money! I also find fun working with brands I may not have thought about before as it keeps me on my toes finding subjects that I find interesting that fit in well.

Hi Nige, Each of our blogs are personal and each of us have different thresholds for collaboration and objectives to blogging. I only do collaborations that interest me and where the money is okay, but then I have a full time job and blogging, for me, is supposed to be for pleasure. We are all different. Firstly well done! It’s not easy to get recognition. And secondly, 100% agree with you. I decided long ago that I would only do campaigns that fit with my blog, that means I turn down lots, not because they are “bad” brands but it would be like seeing Eastenders on Sky Sports. Nothing wrong with either of them and millions like them both, but not on the same channel. Even great authors (JK Rowling is one) have a pseudonym when they write in a different style.
Definitely green eyed monsters.

I think this is a great post, as a new blogger starting out I obviously don’t get involved with any of this (hopefully one day) however I doubt that the bloggers calling people out for working with particular brands would be doing so if the offers were landing at their door!

Excellent post. And well done on working so hard and reaping the rewards. All we want is a better future for ourselves and our family. So good on you for doing that. Not only that, you are also a top bloke who on more than one occasion has answered questions I’ve had about the business or industry. For this I’m truly thankful and will never forget.

Before the blog I had now I was had a pretty decent blog where I worked with brands. I worked with brands that fitted mt blog buy that was mt choice. Surely each blogger has the right to choose who they work with without others judging them. It’s very weird to think that other bloggers give opinions on other bloggers opportunities. #ThatFridayLinky

I have never worked with a brand because I’m new and still trying to establish myself, but I’d love to do so eventually. I don’t see anything wrong with it. What I do think is sad is seeing a great blog suddenly lose its identity and voice in a constant stream of sponsored posts…but that just means I stop reading. I don’t judge the blogger, because if they’re doing what makes them happy/money it’s up to them. And that is quite rare because most people value their blog and readers enough to mainly do things that suit their niche.

I have been known to work with companies that on paper appear to be nothing related to parenting or lifestyle but I always find a way to bring it back to my niche. This is a good read. Agree with you. There are too many people who think that they have a right to be your boss. When it comes to getting paid that is a tricky one. Even though people have a right to accept whatever payment they want, there is that danger of PR taking advantage of this and paying out as little as they possibly can. However if you have a very good active following and companies want you, they will pay whatever you ask.

If I can stand over it and it’s worth while then I’ll do it. I turn down a lot of ‘opportunities’ on the basis of me not liking their products or their rate of pay. Each to their own. But I don’t get this blanket ‘oh you worked with them!’ Attitude
