Breaking up and social media

February 13, 2016

A few days before Christmas my 20 year old daughter broke up with her boyfriend for the second time in just over six months.

Social media today has a lot to answer to. Her boyfriend had gone out for a night out with his mates for his birthday.
On snapchat that night my daughter saw her then boyfriend with different girls. It has to be said that it was possibly all innocent, but unfortunately for him he already had form in this sort of behaviour and she was understandably very suspicious.

Before social media took control of our lives she would never have been any the wiser so is social media good? In this case, I have to say yes because she found out something she needed to know.
The fall-out of a relationship and break up is never easy. Initially she was very angry that she had been treated as a mug and that slowly moved on to tears and lots of upset. She was hurting and felt she had just wasted two and half years of her life. Of course she hadn’t because there were without a doubt good times, but in this case it was not forever.
It’s been a few weeks now and she has definitely had a few sad times, but gradually she is moving on. She’s booked a summer holiday with friends and is going out a bit more to distract herself while the pain of the relationship subsides.
The interesting point to me is that she has blocked him on social media so she can’t see what he’s up to and also he can’t see her life.
Gone are the days when a relationship ended and that was it. You might possibly bump into each other in town although usually that was rare.
I love social media, but occasionally it has huge drawbacks.

Oh wow, I look forward to the days when I go through all this with my two. I think one of the most negative impacts of social media is when you see a former couple warring on social media. Just not the way to do things. I think your daughter was right to block him. I hope she gets over the break up as swiftly as she can.

You're right, social media has its good and bad points.Does make me wonder if I'd have given some of my ratbag boyfriends second chances back in the day if I'd have seen other girls draped over them.Which I know full well would be the case!My 17 year old has just finished a relationship and seems the whole world knows about it.Think I'd rather it the way we had it!

I remember seeing my ex with other girls on social media when it first came out really. I hated it but it did help with making a future decision to break up. We were still friends on Facebook but after he stopped chatting I removed him.No point anymore. I hope your daughter has a brill holiday and gets over him soon. As you say social media is useful but so upsetting sometimes xx #justanother linky

I'm sorry to hear about the break up, but good for her for making plans and slowly moving on. I think there are so many positive things with social media but I do feel sorry in ways for younger people growing up today (I'm in my mid-30s so social media has only been part of my properly adult life). We all make mistakes and for most of us we could get away with it, but for the generations growing up with social media it feels like their entire lives are online. Tricky! #justanotherlinky

I've always said that social media well especially facebook is relationship suicide.
I for one have been there many a time, whether its photos or a comment on some girls post or a extra kiss they've put or even just a like on another girls picture. Its insane the impact such a thing like social media can have on our lives.

Your daughter is very pretty 🙂 .. and shell get snapped up in no time. She's probably done the right thing by blocking him, what you can't see..can't hurt you and all that

Hope thinks start looking up a bit for her, must be hard for you even seeing your little girl upset and hurting x

Social media has a huge part to play in peoples lives these days, I am just so glad I met a wonderful lady and got married before the social media boom! I hope your daughter doesn't dwell to much, we have all been there unfortunately (but not so much publicly as social media dictates!)

I completely agree! I have a very love/hate relationship with social media and as someone who went through a bad break-up in the last 10yrs I found social media holding me back as a young 20-something from moving on and enjoying my life. Although I also agree like you that your daughter would not have known about anything untoward going on if she hadn't been involved with social media. It has its positives and negatives, I hope your daughter enjoys her newly-single life, shes still so young 🙂

There definetly are drawbacks to social media. It can twist things in ways they wouldn't without it. Thanks for linking up to #justanotherlinky xx

Sorry for your youngen and her recent upset mate! She’ll bounce back I’m sure.

I don’t think things like this really have anything to do with social media, it’s people. Social media is merely exposing us. Snapchat didn’t make him act like a prick, it only exposed him. If you’re a bad person or you make some mistakes, you’ll get found out in the end, social media or no social media.
