Brilliant dad feature week 17
This week our brilliant dad feature is Matt from Chicago in the U.S. And he blogs at SpiralingUpwards.com. Thank you very much for taking part.
1. Have you always wanted to be a dad?
Maybe not always, but for a long time.
2. How did you feel when you’re children were born?
I had a whole flood of emotion all at once. My son came into this world via an emergency C-section after tangling the cord around his neck. The doctors and nurses flooded our hospital room and wheeled my wife away for the surgery. By the time I got there he was stabilized, and the C-section took place just a few minutes later. I’ve never been so happy to hear the sound of a baby cry.
3. What have been the most rewarding experiences so far?
My son is 2 now. It’s like he’s a human sponge. The most rewarding experiences for me are when he learns and repeats something new. He can sing his ABCs, and knows most of the letters by site. He knows his colors, and numbers. He’s starting to throw a ball pretty good. It’s just so much fun to watch them grow from tiny infants into people.
4. What are some of funniest moments to have happened to you as a dad?
The funny moments happen left and right. Just tonight I was trying to feed him a grilled cheese sandwich made with a toaster oven while he’s screaming for vegetables. The other night he said “no” to chicken while screaming for green beans. The other day he tattled on the cat for not singing her ABCs while he and I sang them. The unpredictability of what comes out of his mouth next is what makes it so great.
5. Have there been any situations with your children that you found difficult to cope with?
I had a really hard time with the high-pitch of my son’s cry at first. It seemed like nature wanted everyone within a 5-mile radius to understand that my kid was hungry, tired or poopy. He can still hit those notes once in a while, but I’m a little more used to it. The crying for no reason can test my nerves from time to time, but usually it can be turned around pretty quick. For the most part our son is very good natured though, which he gets from his mother.
6. What are your dreams and hopes for your children?
I just want my son to be happy. I want him to find something he enjoys and go after it. I don’t want him to dread the sound of his alarm clock in the morning.
