Brilliant dad feature week 38
This weeks brilliant dad feature is John, a dad from Essex. I blog at Dad You Geek where you will find my random wittering on life with a few helpful tips on tech and geeky stuff as well as posts about being a dad to 2 girls with a bit of an age gap.
1. Have you always wanted to be a dad?
Yes, I am from a big family and have always enjoyed being around and part of a fun and loving family, and when growing up always aspired to have my own family
2. How did you feel when your children were born?
My eldest is my step daughter so wasn’t around when she was born, but was lucky enough to be part of her life from when she was 4 up! As for the little geek, when she was born was a time of mixed emotions. Mel’s labour wasn’t straight forward and end in an emergency c-section. I was used to having a toddler around (with Ashleigh being 4) but I had no idea how to deal with a baby, so my first few weeks were seen panicking when she was asleep that she wasn’t breathing, but on the flip side I was excited to have another daughter and watch her grow and the two of them interact.
3. What have been your most rewarding experiences so far as a Dad?
This is a really hard one to choose, I am very proud of Ashleigh and the wonderful young lady that she has become and am also proud of the smart girl little geek is and ambition she is showing. I guess if I really had to choose though it would be the open and approachable relationship I have with both my daughters who know if they need to talk to me, ask for a hug or a shoulder to cry on they know I am always there, regardless!
4. What are some of funniest moments to have happened to you as a dad?
There have been many! It started with when Mel went into the operating theatre for her c-section and they let me scrub up, I did so willingly and walked in to the theatre announcing George Clooney is here (not looking remotely like him), the theatre cracked up laughing, a bit of light relief during a tense night!
Another time Mel was getting annoyed with me running around the house with the kids (yes I am a big kid) and telling us to stop before one of the kids gets hurt, only for me to run away from little geek who was 4 at the time and ending up smacking my foot on a door frame breaking it in the process.
5. Have there been any situations with your children that you have found difficult to cope with?
This is a simple one, death, sorry to bring the tone down, but my children have seen far to much death! They have lost 2 aunts to breast cancer and both have been difficult for them to deal with. It was hard to explain to them why these things happen and that nobody is to blame.
6. What are your dreams and hopes for your children?
This is a simple one, I hope my children fulfil their dreams (whatever they are) and are happy in life. Little Geek is very ambitious (wants to be an A&E Doctor), I hope that continues and Ashleigh is a hard worker, giving her all at what ever job she is doing. For me it is that simple, I don’t care how rich they become or poor, as long as they are happy in life.
