Children and discipline
We have twins that are almost three years old.
My wife and myself do not believe in smacking I have always thought it is medicine for adults and just makes you feel better,but in truth it doesn’t solve anything and you always feel bad after you have done it so where is the point.
R the one twin is very dominant and knows what she wants,and during the last few weeks has been very temperamental if she can’t get her own way,so the question is how do we get her to do as she is being asked without using a severe punishment.
As I have already mentioned we don’t think smacking works,also we have tried reasoning with her but that didn’t work either,
So when she decided she wasn’t going to sit down for Sunday dinner we had to decide what we should do for the best result.We decided to take her favourite toy dog off her this took a couple of goes, but worked and she sat down and ate her dinner eventually.
Now if you ask her if she wants to keep her toy dog what does she have to be she says a good girl .
How long this will last who knows but for the moment it works without shouting or worst as I am very anti smacking.

We use this technique for our 6 year old, we take away something she really loves until she behaves again and then it becomes a threat as such”be a good girl or *said beloved thing* is taken away”
We’re struggling with our 1 year old at the minute, he’s taken to throwing things about and hitting when he’s told no…still trying to work out the best method for him haha.

We’ve never smacked our children and never would, it’s just not our approach. We have a reverse reward type system where like you, we take things away with the intention of showing the children that there are repurcussions to negative behaviour, as there are in everyday life. So far it’s been a really big success for us, especially with our raucous three year old boy!
