How to Create a Fairytale Birthday Party
Inject a bit of magic into your little one’s next birthday by making the theme all about fairy tales. Whether you stick to one theme and see how far you can go with it, or you decide to mash up several fairy tales for a truly eclectic bash, the party is sure to be a winner with children and parents alike.
So, where do you start? Check out these top tips for creating a fairy tale party that will be long-remembered.
Getting Everyone Involved
First and foremost, you need to ask your child what their favourite fairy tale is and what they love so much about it. If this is Snow White, for example, you can start to think about costumes for the day and begin to put together some ideas on decoration and entertainment too. Instagram is a great place to gather some ideas – try using the hashtag #fairytale or even a main character such as #snowwhite. There’s sure to be lots to kick start your birthday party theme.
Also, keeping the birthday girl or boy in the loop as things unfold will keep excitement levels high, but be sure to keep a couple of things back as a surprise for the big day!
The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
A classic from Alice in Wonderland, this fairy tale is bursting with cool ideas for the party. As well as providing an interesting way to serve the children something to eat and drink, it also gives you the chance to get really creative. Think pocket watches, big top hats and monocles for a dress up element as well as lots of cake, savoury bites and, of course, tea! A selection of tasty fruit juices sipped out of fancy cups will do the trick.
To keep with the ‘mad’ part of the tea party, fill the table with varying sizes of teacups – from tiny, doll-sized ones through to huge garden planter ones. Hang a branch from the ceiling with a plush cat toy in it to represent the Cheshire Cat. Another little touch is to have different sized chairs around the table so that it gives a quirky look to the arrangement.
You can also play the Disney film Alice in Wonderland while the tea party is going so the room is filled with the music and characters from the fairy tale.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Turn a game of hide and seek into something magical by taking a leaf out of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Use an old wardrobe as a base for counting to 20 (or higher if you have a large house) and let the game go on for a good while to tire them out. A great way to open up your living space to accommodate big parties is with folding doors giving you the option for a closed space for the tea party and an open space for activities on the big day.
As a precaution, you can do a little safety check of the house to make sure there’s nothing at child-height that could be dangerous.
Other games with a fairy tale twist can include karaoke sing-a-longs to their favourites – even the shyest children might join in, especially if there’s a group song to be sung! You can also test the children’s knowledge on well-known fairy tales with lines from the film or playing the first five seconds of a song from the soundtrack.
Magical Unicorns
As you may already be aware, unicorns are all the rage right now. The whole world has gone mad for the rainbow-eating majestic creatures in terms of clothing, accessories and even hair colour inspiration. If this is the theme you go for there is an abundance of ideas to spur you on including unicorn hair bands, colourful outfits in the rainbow spectrum and, most importantly, unicorn-themed cupcakes!
Here’s a great video showing step-by-step how to make unicorn cupcakes so you can wow all guests with your culinary expertise. Or, if your child is a budding baker, get them to give it go under your supervision. You could even step it with a bug unicorn birthday cake with all the trimmings – multi-coloured layers of sponge await you…
Other quirky items that will fit well with the fairy tale theme include rocking horses, big ‘magical’ mirrors – investing in a distorted mirror will really set this off well – and even a big gingerbread house to devour a la Hansel and Gretel.
