Daughters Hugging A Relative After Receiving A Present This Christmas
Our five year old twin girls have recently started Rainbows which is the first stage of the girl guide movement that will eventually lead on to possibly, the Brownies and Girl Guides. I thinks it’s a particularly great organisation that hopefully the girls will learn many life lessons from, that they can take into adulthood.
So when I read an article recently about the Girl Scout Movement in the USA, well quite honestly it shocked me. I will add this has not to my knowledge been endorsed by the UK Girl Guides Movement.
They are asking parents to not encourage their young daughters, to hug or kiss relatives. Their reasoning behind this totally shocked me mainly because I have never heard such utter nonsense in my life. They said that by giving a relative a hug or kiss over Christmas after receiving a gift, will be teaching them that in later life they may feel the need to give physical affection, for kindness shown to them.
There are two points about this article that really bothered me and quite honestly I just wanted to say something. In the article as I have already said it says that a girl hugging a relative when a young child could impact on them later in life. Of course what that actually means is you go out on a date with a fella, he buys dinner maybe gets you flowers etc, and because as a small child you hugged relatives after receiving a gift, you will feel obliged to sleep with them, absolutely total rubbish, in my opinion, and I can see no connection between the two.
The whole idea of a small girl growing up thinking that when they become a young adult that if a man buys them something they need to give physical attention in return is totally ludicrous. What also bothers me about this is the stereotyping of men, it actually is saying that all men should have physical attention returned to them because they bought dinner or whatever. I’m pretty sure that most men have come a long way since those dark ages and hopefully they respect women as their equals.
The reasons why I think this is crazy is simple, I have four daughters and two of which are now in their twenties, they always have given relatives a kiss or hug when receiving a present as a small child. I never encouraged it, it was their way of saying thank you. Which is a totally appropriate way of saying thank you and showing some love.
I educated, and then talked to my daughters that you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do, you give consent, and no man should pressure you into anything you don’t want to do, and I have always said if they buy you gifts you don’t have to give anything in return, most importantly you don’t have to give physical attention or sleep with them, which is what the Girl Scout Movement USA is actually saying. I struggle when these things are said by influential groups. When there is simply no findings to suggest this happens.
My second point is what an incredibly strange world we live in, when this kind of thing is suggested as not a good thing.
Christmas is a time to show love and enjoy being around family and if your young daughters give a relative a kiss or hug because they brought them a present, I find it impossible to understand what’s wrong with it? Showing love to your family, completely normal behaviour in a loving home.
We live in a world that can be so full of hate and shocking acts of terrorism, and we still live in a society that people’s choices and ways of life are so often considered unacceptable. I will say that is usually said by bigots, or people who should know better. Now we are telling our young daughters not to hug or kiss a relative for a present that they have received around the ultimate family time, Christmas. What is the world coming too? Before long we all be walking around like robots with no emotions. What a sad world that would be.
Here is the link to said article by The Girl Scout Movement USA which has inspired my rant
I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject. Do you agree or not?

Totally agree with you, the world has gone mad, the other last week I was listening to the radio and they said we had to stop tickling our children as it would lead them to being sexually assaulted as they feel they lose control when they are tickled and it sets a bad precedent. Such a sad and unhappy world now ! ☹️

That’s absolute nonsense, if anything we should be tickling more, I spent 15 years as a youth worker and actively encourage parents to use tickling for two main reasons, not only is it a fun and very easy way to get the physical contact with your children that is essential for strong attachment, but it is also a great way to teach about consent. Tickling, if done too much can border on pain and when the young person says stop you stop, not starting again until they ask you explaining that you ‘wont tickle them again until you say that it’s okay’. Fun easy teaching with a huge impact and respect for the child.

Why does this world have create such abbserd articles. If you are raising your children the right way then surely you would be teaching them about consent and being in control of his/her own body.
There’s too many restrictions nowadays with our own kids it’s getting out of control.
A great read.

Oh my gosh, the world has gone absolutely crazy hasn’t it. This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. As if hugging when receiving a gift as a child will make that person sleep with someone later in life. The notion is obsurb and I totally agree with what you have said about it. I won’t be discouraging my daughter from hugging relatives anytime soon. #TriumphantTales

What on earth has this world come to that a child can’t hug a relative. I’m in my 40’s and I still love hugging my two teenage boys and my teenage boys love hugging me (in private of course!). Hugs are so great for relieving stress, to showing love and affection and kindness.
The world has gone utterly mad!

[…] It’s often said that children are facing more pressure than ever before at school so why add more to them. Don’t be in a rush to make them grow up. Let kids be kids. There is a great Blog on a similar subject by DIY Daddy, check it out HERE. […]

I am not one to force hugging or kisses with Ben, but funnily enough I was discussing the movie Trolls with Hubby today and saying how I loved that hugging was shown as a regular non-special thing. Just part of their life.
I do not agree that hugs and kisses are showing that a physical reaction is needed after receiving a gift, a smile is just as sufficient. some see a kiss and hug as just as polite as a thank you after receiving a gift. I do think the PC police have gone into overdrive here!
Thank you for sharing this with us at #TriumphantTales. I hope to see you back next week!

I agree with you 100%, it’s ridiculous, I’m really fed up at the moment of all this nonsense. The only thing I would add is never to force a child to give a relative a hug if they don’t want to, as I had an uncle that made me feel uneasy from a very early age, turns out I was right to have avoided him, however uncomfortable/embarrassed it made the other adults feel when I refused to go near him. #tweensteensbeyond

Hearing things like this infuriates me it really does. I always hugged and kissed relatives but was taught how to respect myself and that I do not need to do anything I don’t want to do. Why organisations feel the need to take something innocent and loving in a family and give it a sordid meaning is cruel. We need to teach our children love and respect and maybe this world may change for the better. #TriumphantTales
