Demanding Your Time That’s What Five Year Olds Do!

September 26, 2017

So what’s a five year olds job in life? Demanding your time of course, and I get it in stereo with twins!

There is not a day that passes, in fact a minute that passes, in which I don’t hear mum or dad being called out along with them asking if they can I have this or do that. It’s constant! If it wasn’t so constant and demanding it would be funny, because it’s not funny.

I have often wondered what makes children of a certain age so demanding of your time? Surely there comes a time where they just play together nicely on their own. I have to admit the twins at five years old are starting to do that for a milli second every few hours.

Here are my top six demands from my Five Year Old twin girls.

1. The moment you wake in the morning the demands are instant. Can I have a drink? I’m hungry! Can you get my breakfast, and so on

2. Once breakfast is finished it’s, “What are we going to do now?” “I want to draw or write”, “Dad, mum! Where is that toy I haven’t played with for six months?” Oh yes I want it now!

3. The other day I came home from work and one of twins came up to me and said, “Dad can you do this for me?” “Can I have my new school shoes?” This was all before I washed the paint off my hands. I said give me a minute, needless to say that wasn’t good enough.

4. Another fascinating demand I hear all the time is. I’m hungry and OMG, they will not wait! They must have something to eat in a micro second, or it’s meltdown time!

5. The expectations of five year old children on a daily basis is quite interesting. Everyday they will ask where are we going today. When I was growing up I know I made my own fun in the back garden, children today however, xpect a day trip nearly every day.

6. My five year old twins, I’m pretty convinced don’t believe in quiet time. No, actually they do, once a year if you are lucky. I often think wouldn’t it be nice to just sit down and watch films all day. Not a chance in our home!

So it’s bedtime and I have either been with the girls all day or at work and I am so knackered, my brain hurts. They have been been awake since 6am over 12 hours on the go, never stopping for a breath and I’m sure they might wonder why I’m just a little bit irritated because they won’t go to sleep, it’s because I’m tired as well!

Five year old children are very demanding, and at times it’s exhausting, but would I have it any other way? Not a chance! It keeps me alive and energised. Just please now and again, have a rest girls and give your dad a little rest too!

Mate, I’m learning that the whole demanding thing is difficult enough with one, let alone two. Hats off to you 🙂

It’s like you know my life and my daughter is only 4?! So I have at least another year of this eh? She’s poorly at the minute but despite this she dragged herself off the sofa as soon as I walked in the door and asked me if I could play….. I love it, but like you if, every once in a while, a 30 mins TV break could happen, that would be great!

Little Man is 5 in December and is already like this. They just don’t stop do they?! And you have 2! Hats off to you. It’s hard enough with one. Thanks for linking this up to #TriumphantTales. Hope to see you again on Tuesday!
