Does anybody win in Divorce

February 2, 2016

This post was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend recently.

I am divorced from my first wife I think, if not that makes me a bigamist! Only joking!

My friend has not long got been divorced and when he tells me of some the antics that his ex-wife gets up to it vividly reminds me of 11 years ago when I got divorced.
All these years later I have begun to think who are the winners in divorce. I guess you can equate it two ways and decide whether you consider wining on monetary value or on an emotional level.

In my case it has to be said that my ex-wife had pound signs in her eyes. The fact that we had three children didn’t alter the fact that she wanted all the money, so after an element of negotiation I decided you can have it because I wanted to be happy and all this arguing in all honesty could have gone on for years.
Consequently I signed a deal, although I mistakenly thought this would elimate any future hassle, but for years there was always a problem and just plain nastiness. The continual use of children as weapons, pleading poverty, the classic line ask your father he’s loaded! I wish.
Now all this time has passed and I have finally realised that the problem wasn’t money. It was the fact that I had moved on and found happiness which didn’t involve a huge bank balance.
Yes my ex got the house and most likely financial security, but she ended up being jealous of my happiness.
That old saying comes to mind, money cannot buy you happiness.
Would I change anything? Not a chance while I draw breath. This is the happiest I have been in my life.
I’m sure in a lot of cases that couples can sort things amicably, but there are many like mine which are very messy.
It’s important to remember in a divorce there is a lot to be achieved, but if like me you can find real true happiness then you are the winner.

I can't imagine that there is much happiness in a divorce, certainly in the short term, and there is a huge ripple effect. You were right to step away gracefully, but of course, these things linger… well done for writing this!
