Drugs Are They Becoming Socially Acceptable?

When I was growing up drug culture, although it was there, certainly wasn’t prominent in society. As I entered my mid-teens, it was growing in popularity. Smoking weed, smack and some chemical drugs were becoming more readily available. Through the pop- culture of the time, many celebrities were in my opinion endorsing drugs as a socially acceptable hobby. There is no doubt that many of these pop stars, that many young people looked up to, were saying it’s ok to do drugs, so when I see them now saying drugs are bad, I look at them in dismay, because of their influence over the youth of the day from years ago. It started a cycle of drug use, that has without a doubt in my opinion passed down the generations.

It’s fascinates me how over a period of time anything can be socially acceptable. If tobacco or alcohol was invented today and we knew of the dangers of those substances they would be instantly banned. There is no doubt about that.

I personally never really dabbled with drugs I have smoked weed twice in my life. The first time I felt nothing and then the second time it was awful, and I had to sleep until the effects disappeared. I never did it again, or any other drugs.

So let’s fast forward to the present day. There is every sort of drug easily available, and incredibly it’s quite cheap. Cocaine is now a totally acceptable drug to the youth of today. It’s considered by many as a part of their Friday or Saturday night out. Of course what many youngsters don’t realise is that you will become addicted and life will become a downward spiral after that.

I live next door to a pub car park and I have on a few occasions watched young people openly doing drugs, and there is even a local drug dealer not far from where I live. I might add we live in a good area, but that proves that drugs have no boundaries when it comes to society.

My son went to a music festival last summer and was being offered drugs by children as young as 12, obviously selling the drugs for their drug dealing parents. I guess some people have absolutely no morals.

I have been very lucky with my older children that none of them have got themselves involved with the drug culture. I’m sure they have all tried it, but thankfully that’s as far as it has gone. I believe it was a combination of me talking to them about the dangers of drugs and that it’s not a good road to travel, but also luck because you just never know. All the education in the world won’t stop teenagers using drugs if that’s what they want to do

Has society accepted drugs, or is society just ignoring the devastating effects drugs can have? It destroys lives, but also to the family of the drug taker, that has to deal with the fall-out.

Drugs kill and ruins lives. We will never have a drug free society, I doubt it very much. I would love to know what you think.
