Easy Ways To Protect Yourself At Work

February 1, 2021

When you are at work, you need to look after your body. This not only protects you from being injured, but it also prevents you from enduring a long-term injury for the rest of your life. If you get hurt at work, your ability to continue doing that job may decrease, meaning that you may not be able to carry the same amount of income home to help your family. Therefore, it is important to do everything you can do to protect yourself from injury and you must give priority to your health and safety while at work at all times. Every individual has a duty to keep themselves as secure as possible. When it comes to your safety, do not take any shortcuts. Here are a few tips on how to protect yourself when you’re at work.

Read the safety manual – and understand it

Every workplace, no matter whether you’re working in a retail store or a heavy lifting factory floor, will have a health and safety manual. Upon employment, you’ll have been provided with these documents to read and agree to. It’s easy to say yes and sign away, but for the sake of your health, take the time to actually read through it – and make sure you understand it too! Even if you’re reading it properly for the first time after being employed for some time, you should ask questions about anything you’re unsure about so that you can remain as safe as possible at all times.

Buy your own protection

Your employer should provide you with the necessary equipment to keep you safe in the workplace, but there’s nothing stopping you from providing yourself with extra protection providing it doesn’t interfere with your job. For example, eye shields if you’re working around bright lights or sparks and industrial hearing protection if you’re around noisy machinery all day. Doing this can prevent and potentially save your eyesight and hearing later on in life.

Notice when others are being dangerous

While your main priority is ensuring you’re as safe as possible, someone else’s mistakes could hurt you too. Take note of what your colleagues are doing to ensure they’re following the rules too. If you find that their actions are potentially dangerous, report the incident to either your boss or the HR department. Not only will you be putting your own health first, but you could potentially save their lives too!

Prompt your employer for better health and safety

Finally, some workplaces will put in the bare necessities when it comes to health and safety, but if you feel that there are certain aspects missing, or that the company should add certain rules and regulations, you should prompt your employer to do so. In most cases, they’ll be more than happy to listen as it will keep their team safe. However, if you don’t get the response you’re after, it might be time to look for a new position where your health and safety is a priority to your employer.
