Getting On Top of Your To-Do List
Being a parent is hard work. Any parent will know that from the moment their little one arrives in this world, everything changes. You need to cater to their every need, ensuring that they’re where they need to be, when they need to be, well fed, clothed, healthy and happy. This takes a lot of energy and effort. So, it’s not all too surprising that when you’re managing your family, you can quickly and easily fall behind on other areas of your life. Almost all of us end up with a huge to-do list of non-urgent tasks that rarely get ticked off any time soon. Of course, you need to prioritise the urgent and more important things in life, but you do need to make sure that you’re making time for the more day to day and mundane tasks too. Here are a few tips that will help you to get on top of your to-do list.
Create a List
First and foremost, you should make sure to create an actual list of things that you need or want to do. This gives the tasks some sort of real life element, rather than them being a fleeting thought that passes through your mind at inopportune moments that then get forgotten again. There are plenty of ways to create your list. You can have a paper list. You can have a list in your phone’s notes app. Whatever works best for you, it’s good to have an actual space where you can jot down things you need to complete, as and when they occur to you. You can then refer back to the list when you have time on your hands and actually work through them.
Give Yourself Deadlines
Once you have a list, give yourself some deadlines. Putting a deadline tasks automatically makes it more likely to be completed. It gives you a goal and prevents you from simply putting the task off time and time again. Of course, you need to make sure that you are reasonable and realistic with your deadlines, otherwise there’s no point in setting them. You shouldn’t claim to yourself that you’re going to put up shelves, apply for new jobs, start a new hobby and visit ten friends in the space of a week. Measure your time out and set reasonable timescales for all of the things you need to do.
Ask for Help
Sometimes, things don’t get done because we rely on others to help us with them. We avoid asking and so the task gets put off. Instead, if you need assistance to get something done, just ask. Ask the person you want to help you and create a day and time for them to help you if they agree. Of course, other people have busy lives and we don’t want to be a nuisance. But if you don’t ask you don’t get. Alternatively, you need to remember that there are always professional services out there. You can always pay someone to help you with pretty much anything – putting a shelf up, trimming a hedge, painting your lounge… the list goes on.
Ideas
So, what could feature on your to-do list? There are certain tasks that are much more commonly neglected and put off than others, often with us not even realising that we are procrastinating and postponing. Here are some ideas that can help get the ball rolling and, once complete, will lift a weight from your shoulders.
Deep Cleaning
We all do our routine chores. We run the vacuum around. We wipe down surfaces we’ve used. We dust the corners. But there are more in-depth, time consuming tasks that we tend to avoid. Cleaning the oven. Washing the carpets. Unclogging drains. The list goes on. It really is important that you tackle these harder and less convenient deep cleaning tasks routinely. Whether that’s doing it yourself or calling in professionals to help.
Home Repairs
We are all guilty of ignoring home repairs as they arise. Most of us will see an issue and simply hope that it goes away or resolves itself somehow. Even if it is apparent that this won’t happen, many of us will put off the repair work until the issue is no longer manageable and is causing more major damage to itself or further damage to your home. Avoid this. If you can see an issue, get in touch with the relevant repair specialist as soon as possible. Whether that’s a plumber, an electrician or anyone else.
Car Cleaning
Again, another cleaning tasks comes to the list, but really, think about it – when is the last time you had your car properly cleaned. Sure, you might hose it down. Sure, you might drive it through an automatic car wash from time to time when is convenient for you. But you should also have your car properly detailed by specialists every once in a while. Car Detailing will ensure that every nook and cranny of your car is properly taken care of, from the wheels to the interiors.
Attending Health Check Ups
There are routine health appointments that we should all attend. You should visit the dentist once every six months. You should visit your optician once every two years. People with cervixes should have cervical screening carried out. People with a prostate over a certain age should have a prostate exam. The list goes on. The issue is, many people assume they don’t need to go to these checks if they feel fine. This isn’t the point. These checks are precautionary and can monitor health over time. Call the relevant parties and make an appointment. Then keep on top of your appointments. You can always ask for reminders closer to the date too.
These are just a few pieces of advice that can help you when it comes to getting on top of your to-do list. Hopefully, they will help to change your schedule for the better!
