Getting Your Car Ready For Those Winter Months

Winter is nearly upon us and this gets me thinking that I need to sort out the cars and prepare them for those winter conditions. If I’m honest, I don’t particularly like driving, and like a lot of people I don’t relish driving when there is heavy rain, ice or snow on the ground. It’s very important that your car is in tip top condition to deal with whatever weather the winter months will bring. So I thought I would put together a checklist for your car to make sure you and your family are safe driving this winter.

1. Servicing

As winter approaches one of the first things I arrange is a full service of both family cars. It’s so important that you keep all your servicing up to date. You may not think there is anything wrong with your car, but in the long run it pays to have an expert look your car over.

2. Tyres

Making sure your tyres are all legal and have a good amount of tread on them is also important, as well as checking that there is no damage to the sidewalls of the tyre. You should also check that your tyres are correctly inflated to the car manufacturers recommended psi. The current law on tyres says that they must have 1.6mm of tread across three quarters of the tyre.

3. Brakes

This really is a big one for me. With weather conditions in the winter being completely unpredictable, in an emergency you want to make sure you are going to stop, especially if you have your family in the car with you. 4. MOT

I always make sure that the MOT’s are up to date on both the cars ,and there is no reason nowadays why you should forget because you can actually get your MOT one month in advance. Our MOT’s are due in October so I always ring the garage to book them in, in September, just in case any work or repairs are required.

5. Check all your levels

Weather in the winter as I have said is completely unpredictable and it’s important to have all the levels topped up. One that a lot of people forget is the washer water. During the winter months the windscreen can get very dirty quickly and there is nothing worse than going to clean it and it’s empty. If you can’t see properly through the windscreen it’s very dangerous and don’t forget to make sure the wiper blades are working to remove water quickly, especially when we have heavy rain.

So there you go. That is my five tips to keep yourself safe on the roads this winter. It is better to be safe than sorry.
