How to Keep the Kids Physically Active While Indoors

January 18, 2021

If you’re like many of the families across the country right now, the COVID-19 pandemic has you spending a lot more time at home than ever before. And while that may not have seemed like a big deal at first, we’re now almost a full year into the pandemic. It’s likely that everyone is getting cabin fever, feeling bored, and probably not being as physically active as they would normally be. So, how can you get the kids up and moving, and being physically active while indoors? We’ve got some great ideas you can use.

Create a Scavenger Hunt

Here’s a fun activity that you can do any time but is especially great on those rainy days where you have no option but to stay indoors. Hiding objects in the house and then giving kids a list of what they are looking for can provide great fun, and requires to them to run around the house. You may want to create a themed scavenger hunt for that extra twist of fun.

Join a Virtual Yoga Class

Virtual exercises classes have really taken off in the past year as they offer people a safe, effective, convenient, and fun way to work out from their own home. In terms of what class to join, doing virtual yoga can be a great way to get the kids moving without it feeling like traditional exercise. Yoga is able to address such things as balance, flexibility and breathing, and it can help kids to calm down and feel more centred. What this means is that they will get a physical workout that also delivers mental-wellness benefits.

Put Together a Weekly Chore List

Chores are another great way to get kids active, and it teaches them about responsibility and how to clean. Obviously, the type and amount of chores you list will need to take into account their age and what they can safely do on their own. It may be that you need to help them if they are young.

Hold a Dance Party

Another fun physical activity is to throw a dance party. This could be a weekly event in the home, and maybe you want to use a theme here too. You can pick a particular genre of music, make it a costume dance party, or incorporate a particular type of dance move. Just be sure to keep it fresh and fun each week so that the kids stay interested.

Set Up an Obstacle Course

For those with enough open space indoors, you can also create your very own obstacle course. You can use different items from around the home, making the course as short and simple or as long and tricky as you like. Kids may even want to take turns setting up the course too.

Sometimes, keeping kids physically active requires a little creative thinking as you try to find activities that will get them up and moving without it feeling like a standard workout.
