How to Live With a Narcissist Partner

January 10, 2023

People love to use the term “narcissist” to describe people they don’t like, but what actually is narcissism? Well, for once, it’s important to remember that narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is real, and it’s not just an excuse to describe someone who is self-absorbed or rude. It’s an actual mental health condition that comes with a set of significant challenges.

In a nutshell, NPD is a personality disorder that is characterised by grandiose behaviour, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. However, it’s vital to recognise that many people with NPD are in therapy and are absolutely capable of being in a healthy and functional relationship.

If you want to build a life with such a person, it can be incredibly challenging, but it’s not impossible. So, before you get married to a narcissist, here are some tips to help you navigate this type of relationship:

Educate Yourself

Before you can even begin to try and understand your partner, it’s important that you educate yourself on what it actually means to be a narcissist. It’s not as simple as being self-absorbed or vain; there’s a lot more to it than that.

Make sure you understand the signs and symptoms of NPD, as well as the different types of narcissism. This will give you a better understanding of what you’re dealing with and how to best approach your partner. It will also allow you to set realistic expectations for the relationship and get included in the therapeutic process if your partner is in therapy.

Set Boundaries

One of the most important things you should do in any relationship is set boundaries, but this is especially important when you’re in a relationship with a narcissist.

Narcissists often try to control their partners and can be very manipulative. They may also gaslight you or try to make you doubt your own reality and perception. It’s important that you recognise these behaviours and do not allow them to continue.

Set clear boundaries with your partner and stick to them. If they cross the line, be firm in enforcing the boundary. It’s also vital to nurture your own outside relationships and hobbies so that you have a support system.

Communicate Clearly

Since narcissists often lack traditional empathy, it’s crucial that you be very clear when communicating with your partner. They may not understand or be able to relate to your feelings, so it’s up to you to express yourself as best as you can.

Try to avoid using “you” statements (e.g., “you are behaving…”, as they will likely just lead to defensiveness. Instead, focus on “I” statements (e.g., “I feel…”) and be as specific as possible about what you’re feeling and what you need.

It’s also important to be patient when communicating, as it may take some time for your partner to actually process what you’re saying.

Take Care of Yourself

Narcissists can be very draining, both emotionally and mentally, so it’s crucial that you make time for yourself. This means taking care of your own physical and mental health, as well as making sure you have a supportive network of friends and family.

It’s okay to take a break from your partner, even if it’s just for a little while. This can be anything from going for a walk by yourself to taking a weekend trip with friends. You need time for yourself to recharge, and your partner should understand that, as it’s also in their best interest.

However, self-care also includes speaking up for yourself when necessary. If your partner is being abusive or manipulative, don’t just ignore it. Start a conversation about it and, if necessary, get help from a therapist or counsellor.

Insist on Action and Fulfilment of Promises

Narcissists often make grandiose promises that they never actually fulfil. They may say things like “I’ll change” or “I’ll do better,” but never actually follow through.

If your partner has made such promises, it’s important that you hold them accountable and insist on action. If they’re unwilling or unable to make the changes they’ve promised, then you need to reassess your relationship.

It’s also important to remember that you cannot change or fix a narcissist; that’s something they have to do on their own. So, if you’re feeling like you’re constantly putting in all the work, it’s time to take a step back and reassess your relationship.

The Bottom Line

It’s important not to demonise narcissists, as many of them are actually in therapy and are working on themselves. That being said, it’s still vital to be aware of the challenges that come along with being in a relationship with a narcissist.

If you want a future with a narcissistic person, make sure you’re prepared for the challenges that come along with it. Educate yourself, set boundaries, and take care of yourself. And, most importantly, don’t be afraid to walk away if the relationship isn’t healthy or fulfilling.
