Making Your Hall/ Landing And Stairs A Feature

When you are decorating in your home, we often forget all about the hall, landing and stairs. The normal reason is we only see it as a method to either get upstairs in our home, and if you want to move from room to room downstairs.

When I have decorated the hall, landing and stairs in our home, I truly believe you should make it a feature of your home. After all you will constantly be walking through this area to reach other parts of your home so why not make it look special.

1. Walls & Ceilings

In our home we don’t have a lot of natural light in the hall, landing and stairs so when picking colours for the walls we decided we wanted a light colour, but also wanted a warm feeling. This meant we went for natural, neutral colours. To make it look special we have one wall which is at the top of stairs that we were able to paint in a bolder colour. This gave the whole area more character.

The ceilings I painted in brilliant white, but the paint was a reflective paint which helped give the whole area a much brighter look.

2. Staircase

The staircase was something that I wanted to really stand out and have a ‘wow’ factor. The hallway runs the length of the stairs downstairs and enters the kitchen. We also have a large landing with a bannister rail.

Making the staircase a feature was very important to me. Staircases can add character and sophistication to this area of your home. I decided to have a wooden staircase with balustrades and to have the bannister rail stained in a light oak finish. I then painted the balustrades and base of the staircase in brilliant white gloss. The combination of this finish really does give staircases a beautiful look.

3. Woodwork and Doors

There is a lot of woodwork and usually many doors in this area of your home. I painted the woodwork in white gloss and decided to purchase new doors with a wood finish in light oak which would match the bannister rail on our staircase.

4. Flooring

The hallway has a massive amount of footfall so deciding on a floor is very important. This is especially important when you have young children who are forever going up and down stairs or moving from room to room. We decided to go for a wooden floor downstairs in the hallway which will be very hard wearing and be able to withstand all the footfall. Of course when the carpet starts to look dirty, grubby and not at it’s best, that is the time to bring in a carpet cleaning company to make your carpet look like brand new again.

On the stairs and the landing we went for carpet to add some warmth to the upstairs and also so it would be quieter on the stairs with kids running up and down them.

So that is what we did when we decorated and re-designed our hall, landing and stairs. There is no doubt making the stairs a feature of the area was the right decision. It definitely made the whole area look perfect.
