Ways to DIY your home workspace

Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or relatively new to the whole do-it-yourself world, creating a home office or workspace is a good project to get stuck into. Of course, there’s no need to try to tackle every single job yourself, but here’s some things you may fancy a go at.

Which jobs are best for beginners?

One of the easiest DIY jobs you can do when you’re creating your own office or workspace, is to do the decorating. If you’re painting the walls, then a good quality paint should take less coats. Just make sure you allow enough time between each coat you do. And a good roller should give you a better finish than a brush. 

Putting up shelves will almost certainly be on your agenda, as having useful storage is a must. And this is also a good task for a DIY beginner. There are a few things to bear in mind of course. You’ll need to check there are no wires running behind the plaster where you’re planning to drill. And you will need to use a spirit level to avoid wonky shelves and brackets.

Using simple woodworking skills

Surprisingly, a simple desk can be made with some basic DIY skills and tools. Plywood, of a good thickness, will work for the top. You can get this cut to size at your DIY store or do it yourself. It will need a sand and oil or varnish to protect it. Then all you really need is four ready-made legs or two trestle legs and some fixings.

If you’ve got some leftover plywood, don’t throw it away. You could turn it into a useful pegboard. You’ll could drill some holes in a grid pattern and use small sections of dowel for your pegs. Then hang above your desk.

Jobs that require a bit of skill

If you’re ready for a bit more of a challenge, then why not try some of the trickier jobs yourself too? Fitting the flooring is one challenge that many people leave to the experts. But you can do this yourself, especially if you’re already handy with measuring and have some basic tools.

Laminate floorboards should be simple enough to fit. But if you fancy a bit of a challenge, why not try a stylish herringbone pattern? You can also fit a carpet yourself, with plenty of detailed guides showing you how to lay carpet at home. If you’re simply replacing an old carpet for something more office-friendly, then you’ll already have your subfloor and grippers in place. So, it’s largely measuring up and learning the correct way to cut your carpet to size.
