Oil Based Gloss Paints Vs Water Based Gloss Paints
Since 2010 laws have been made to make paints safe for the environment. This is why the use of water based gloss paints and satin finishes have become more popular.
In this post I’ll look at the advantages and disadvantages of oil based gloss paints in comparison to water based gloss paints.
Water Based Gloss Paints
- Quick drying
- You can re-coat the same day
- White never yellows
- Brushes can be washed in water
- They have a low odour
- Can be used indoors or outdoors
- They’re self under-coating
- They contain less chemicals which means they’re kinder to the environment
Tip: It’s important to use a fully synthetic brush, such as Hamilton prestige brushes. This will help you to achieve the best finish.
Oil Based Gloss Paints
- Longer drying time
- White will yellow quickly
- Smell hangs around
- All brushes have to be washed with white spirit
- They’re more harmful to the environment
Conclusion
I tend to only use water based gloss or satin finish. The advantages far outweigh the use of oil based gloss.
Leyland or Johnstones water based gloss are highly recommended by myself.
