Protecting Your Teeth While Enjoying Festive Treats

December 12, 2022

Christmas is a fantastic time of year. We get to spend time with our loved ones, enjoy festive activities, and indulge in our favourite festive treats. But this behaviour does have its consequences. Most of us gain a little weight over the holidays, but another area we might be doing damage is in our mouths. Too much sugar, processed foods, and very acidic food and drink can all leave our teeth damaged, stained, or aching. If you want to be able to enjoy treats, without doing any permanent damage to your teeth, here are some tips.

Repair Misalignment

Misaligned teeth are fairly common, and as long as you brush well, and they don’t make you feel self-conscious, they aren’t always a cause for concern. But when your teeth are misaligned, it’s easy for food and bacteria to get trapped, especially over the holidays when you are eating more sweet treats. This can make it hard to brush and cause cavities and discoloration. Clear aligners from Aligner32 can help straighten your teeth and make them easier to look after at Christmas and for the rest of the year.

Get a Check-Up

If you can, getting a check-up with your dentist High Wycombe before the holidays is a great start. They’ll hopefully have time to deal with any issues before you do further damage, but they’ll also be able to make recommendations and give you tailored advice.

Indulge in Moderation

The key to good health over the holidays is typically moderation. Yes, enjoy all of your favourite treats, but don’t go crazy. Enjoy them in moderation and you’ll leave the season as healthy as you started it. This goes for your teeth just as much as your waistline.

Check Your Oral Hygiene Habits

This is a great time to check yourself. We know that we’re meant to brush for two minutes twice a day and floss afterward. But it’s easy for bad habits to set in, especially when we’re busy. Next time you brush your teeth, pay more attention to what you are doing, and use a timer, instead of going through the motions on autopilot. Be sure to visit your dentist as well after the holidays so they can check your dental health situation. If you don’t have one yet, you can check out this dentist Vineland.

Drink Lots of Water

Unfortunately, lots of the rich food that we eat and the drinks that we enjoy at Christmas time, stain our teeth. Red wine can be especially bad. Drinking water between drinks, and with meals, helps to wash staining agents away, keeping your teeth white.

Watch the Prosecco

Prosecco is very acidic and full of sugar. It tastes great, and lots of us enjoy it over the holidays, but it’s terrible for your teeth. Try to save the fizz for special occasions or toasts, instead of drinking it every day through the holiday season.

Switch Your Mixers

Spirits are often better for your teeth than prosecco, red wine which stains, or white wine, which also has a lot of sugar. But the mixers can be a problem. Try to choose sugar-free options where possible.

There’s no reason you can’t enjoy all of your favourite festive treats. But, doing it in moderation, and being mindful of the effects they could have on your teeth will help you to protect them, and leave the festive period with a lovely smile.
