Relationships (Don’t Change Me) Learn To Compromise
Relationship’s are a minefield. They can be full of mis-trust, paranoia, arguments or least that’s what we read about most of the time.
Forming a relationship to me is a strange process because we meet somebody and we must be before anything else, physically attractive to each other. It’s that split second that your head explodes, your stomach does somersaults and you think, wow, and you have a very disturbing looking permanent smile that you can’t remove from your face!
Yes! You have found someone! Now you have to talk and not make a complete fool of yourself and start making up your own language, commonly known as gibberish!
If you have managed to get over these few first steps you just might be able to form a relationship, which of course in those early days amounts to jumping into bed at every waking moment! Wanting to be in each other’s company 24/7.
It really fascinates me how two people usually with totally different backgrounds, upbringings and hobbies, and quite possibly have different outlooks on life can meet each other and become instantly joined at the hip. It’s that unique and wonderful chemistry that manifests itself on meeting someone.
Once that honeymoon period is over, relationships will be tested and we find out if we are actually that well suited. All the little things, all those good and bad habits.
In so many relationships people in my opinion break the cardinal sin. They try to change the person that they fell in love with. Why is that? After all you fell in love with somebody the way they were and all of a sudden you don’t think they dress smart enough or talk out of place and in public they are too loud or say inappropriate comments or are just plain embarrassing. The thing is, they were always like that. You loved that about them or you would have dumped them after a week. So, why try and change them? This is to me is beyond reason!
When you start out in a relationship it fascinates me how when either of two people in the relationship suggest doing something like going to the cinema, for a meal or whatever and the other one just says yeh sure sounds fab. Then a few months or more down the line, suggesting to do something becomes a problem and there is no compromise. It almost becomes a power struggle, like a ‘who is in charge of this relationship’ attitude comes to my mind. In any relationship compromise is a huge factor for a relationship to work long term. You need to be able to please each other even when sometimes you don’t want to necessarily do that. You have to occasionally put yourself out.
Relationships are complicated and it never ceases to amaze me how often they work, but unfortunately in today’s world people give up too easily because I guess it’s easy to just walk away.
If there is no way that you cannot work out the problems in your relationship. There is always help online. Couples counselling is a great place to start putting things right.
Relationships require certain simple things to make them work in my opinion.
1. Trust: Without trust no relationship will go the distance.
2. Compromise: Without compromise no relationship will work. It’s important to please your partner as much as they please you.
3. Don’t Change: Remember who you fell in love with. All those lovely ways that you thought were cute.
4. Love: Love is the main factor in any relationship. Being totally in love with each other is the main secret to any successful relationship, at least that’s what I believe.
I would love to know your experiences and thoughts on relationships.

I make sure to remind myself why I chose the Hubster, especially when we’ve had a fight. Remembering the small reasons you adore your spouse is very helpful in forgiving silly things. #ThatFridayLinky

This is so true. I’d also add “Give them space”. No one likes to be suffocated.

I agree that trying to change someone is a losing battle, but changing yourself can be positive and is pretty much inevitable otherwise we would all be walking around behaving like teenagers. I think “growing” together is (hopefully) the way to keep it all going. Interesting to hear your thoughts #thatfridaylinky

Hi, I think you’ve hit the nail on the gears perfectly with your four key points. In addition to this having your own time/ personal space is also important #thatfridaylinky

You’re spot on there although compromise should only be if it works for you both. There’s some things you shouldn’t have to compromise and above all if you’re not happy then it’s not right. Thanms for hosting #thatfridaylinky x

Relationships are hard work. They are easier if you forget about trying to change another person or ‘fix’ them and just focus on yourself. I don’t mean that in a selfish way, but if you are less reliant on your partner making you happy, your relationship will be better. It’s a hard job to get a balance between having ‘couple’ time and your own space.
Great thought provoking post

I think you have to value yourself before you can trust someone to love you. You are right with all your points 🙂 very wise #thatfridaylinky

it is such a difficult terrain to navigate – if it weren’t then there would not be such a high divorce rate. I appreciate the ideas about not trying to change someone #fridaylinky

Your number 1. Trust is big. It’s something the relationship has to be built on and can’t survive without.

It is so strange how 2 completely different people can make something amazing work! I agree with you though – it probably takes a lot of work and self-awareness to get it right #ThatFridayLinky

Oh how I miss those honeymoon days when hours were spent waiting for a text reply or those excited butterflies before seeing your new love. I feel very lucky to have found someone I love so much and who loves me. We’ve started a family together and got married, not to say it’s always a breeze! Though becoming parents has made us stronger, we don’t really argue anymore…perhaps because we don’t have the energy to! #ThatFridayLinky

Lots of food for thought here – I think the ultimate relationship test is having a child, you’re both sleep deprived and feeling out of your depth, it’s so easy to resort to squabbling and to stop spending quality time together. Now that Miss O’s sleeping a bit better we’ve had a few nights out together and it’s really helped! #ThatFridayLinky

I fully agree with your 4 pillars of love! Openness and honesty are key to my relationship. Being fair to each other and not taking advantage of one another’s generosity is also high priority!

This is why I go so well with my hubby. I’m a pain in the ass sometimes but he just puts up with it and we laugh! I feel I can be myself and it’s fab! Great post and thanks for hosting xx

I completely agree. I agree that most couples probably break up because of trying to change one another.
My husband would never dream of changing me. In fact he thinks I became softer when I had kids and encourages me to get my bite back! Ha ha! #ThatFridayLinky

Great post Nige and very thought provoking. In all honesty, I find relationships very hard. After my first marriage ended I found it very difficult to put my trust in someone else and to allow them to break down those barriers, I think to some extent I still find that hard. I think we would all like to have the perfect relationship and yet of course, it doesn’t exist. #thatfridaylinky

I’d add a fifth point – sense of humour. I can laugh at my husband and myself (although I’m better at the former!) It is important not to change each other I think you’re absolutely right there. #ThatFridayLinky

What a great read! Relationships can be hard work. They need attention from both sides to be a success. Our first year as parents was difficult but getting through has made us stronger #thatfridaylinky

Love this post. I’ve been with my hubby for 16 years and married for ten. We got together as teenagers so we’ve changed a lot and been through so much together. Never change the person you fall in love with and make sure they are your best friend x #thatfridaylinky

I agree, though my husband would probably say I’ve changed him a lot since we met! I think it’s nice when you can grow together and experience new things like becoming parents and still stay on the same page. #thatFridayLinky

I love this post! Everyone said to me that me and Kevin wouldn’t last because I was 16 and he was 24 when we got together, BUT here we are nearly 9 years later with 2 children and still in love 🙂 Things can work, and I think that it’s important to not let other people get involved in your relationship – that’s a point that i would just add #thatfridaylinky

I think the key to my marriage working is that we were friends for 7 years first. We first met in college at the age of 16 and therefore them 7 years included heavy uni parties and becoming an adult. So when we finally wanted to settle down it appeared we were both single at the same time and it just kind of happened. we moved in within six months and havent looked back since.
I dont think we have tried to change eachother because we knew who we both were for so long before hand and it also skipped the initial “getting to know eachother” phase! #thatfridaylinky

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean they are perfect and that you are blind to their flaws. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the one who knows you best and loves you the most trying to help you change into a better and more successful version of yourself. #ThatFridayLinky
